I borrowed this from
upupa_epops, and I'm excited about it! :D
1. How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
At the end of 1999, my favorite soap opera Sunset Beach was cancelled. The internet was a fairly new thing in my life at that time, but I knew enough to realize that there was lots of information on it that I barely knew anything about. On a whim, I searched for SB-related things, and stumbled across my first fan-written fiction. I even remember telling a co-worker that I had found some cool stuff related to this show that just got canceled including finding people who wrote stories about it! But I was totally like, CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT??? PEOPLE WRITE STORIES ABOUT TV SHOWS! HOW NUTS IS THAT???!!
No joke, that was my initial reaction. But then I read a bunch of it, and some of it was really good. I had always dabbled in writing, and had pretty much been writing stories half in my head, half on paper from a young age. In 2000, at the age of 25, I wrote my first fanfic, based on the defunct soap opera Sunset Beach and that was pretty much it. I've been creating in this way ever since.
It was definitely the good fics that pulled me in--they were inspirational--they made me want to write; and the bad fics were motivational because I knew I could write better than a lot of the stuff I was finding. And I was right. In the end I had quite a large fanbase in that fandom, and one of the women I became good friends with even bought me an item from SB off Ebay. It was a robe that the character Antonio wore, and since he was my main muse, it was very fitting. I still have that robe to this day.
