It's so awful and fun to explore: Damon, the Dysfunctional Boyfriend. Ugh. I really loved it, as painful as it was, because the whole reason Elena gave into wanting him was because she felt it would never change; he would always want her, he would always love her, she was secure. So what does he do? He freaks the fuck out and ruins it. Of course.

Elena has expectations, even though he warned her about that. ;-)

I was going to write about them a few years later, when Elena has herself sorted out, and she's trying to teach Damon how to enjoy what they have. To just let it go, be able to have sex simply for fun, to stop overthinking things. To teach him how to have a relationship, basically. And about friendship within the relationship. I'm obsessed with the idea that when Damon was human, it was believed that husband and wife should first of all be friends, and if they additionally love each other, then yeah, good for them.

Ugh, it's a mess in my head.

Oh, interesting about the friendship aspect. I mean, that could definitely be a leftover idea from his mother who may not have married his father for "love."

I think, at least in this scenario, there is a lot of guilt for Damon too, about Stefan. I mean, at the very least he didn't intend his baby bro to catch them in the act, so that's another issue for him. But mostly it is just that he doesn't think she'll stay, and so to even consider that...he's obsessing over the details in an effort to enjoy the moment, but he's not enjoying it at all. And then there's just the fact that's an ass most of the time.

Being Damon is hard.

Damon and Stefan are always so fun when I manage to write them. I don't do it often though...Stefan is always peripheral in my fics, bringing him in should happen more often.

And, I know. Poor Elena. Like loving Damon isn't hard enough, now he has to be all dysfunctional and confusing.

Brilliant as always. I love how rightly complex you have him. Throwing Damon off his game makes complete sense. Our boy is fragile to the point of being a marshmallow Peep sometimes. Of course he's an insecure mess and certainly wouldn't know how to deal in a healthy romantic relationship. Pining and fighting for the girl is one thing- actually getting her? Totally different story.

I can't help but think it would be great to see him secretly reading self-help books like "The Five Love Languages." LOL
