I WILL NEVER WRITE AGAIN :(((((((.

Seriously though. I spent the last week trying to say more or less what you're saying about Damon here, and I couldn't figure it out in a story. This hive mind thing is getting eerie...

As for Elena and Damon: OMG, they're idiots <333333333333.

It's so awful and fun to explore: Damon, the Dysfunctional Boyfriend. Ugh. I really loved it, as painful as it was, because the whole reason Elena gave into wanting him was because she felt it would never change; he would always want her, he would always love her, she was secure. So what does he do? He freaks the fuck out and ruins it. Of course.

Elena has expectations, even though he warned her about that. ;-)

I was going to write about them a few years later, when Elena has herself sorted out, and she's trying to teach Damon how to enjoy what they have. To just let it go, be able to have sex simply for fun, to stop overthinking things. To teach him how to have a relationship, basically. And about friendship within the relationship. I'm obsessed with the idea that when Damon was human, it was believed that husband and wife should first of all be friends, and if they additionally love each other, then yeah, good for them.

Ugh, it's a mess in my head.

(I'm a terrible person, because I'm making your story ALL ABOUT ME, I know :(. It's just that I kind of wanted to talk about this idea, and you triggered my word vomit with your "Do you like doing this?")

the whole reason Elena gave into wanting him was because she felt it would never change; he would always want her, he would always love her, she was secureAnd she was right: he would always want her. What she didn't take into account, however, was that he would know how to want her, but he ( ... )

Oh, interesting about the friendship aspect. I mean, that could definitely be a leftover idea from his mother who may not have married his father for "love."

I think, at least in this scenario, there is a lot of guilt for Damon too, about Stefan. I mean, at the very least he didn't intend his baby bro to catch them in the act, so that's another issue for him. But mostly it is just that he doesn't think she'll stay, and so to even consider that...he's obsessing over the details in an effort to enjoy the moment, but he's not enjoying it at all. And then there's just the fact that's an ass most of the time.

Being Damon is hard.

Oh, it could definitely come from his mother, but also from everyone else? People just believed that if you want to have a successful marriage, you should be friends (the way we believe that if you want to have a good friendship, you mustn't keep secrets from your friend). Many people didn't actually do that, but they still believed that this is the way things should be, in theory.

(At least I hope I'm not making this up. I've never researched this about America, I know it about my country, and I'm extrapolating.)

So your next story is about Damon learning to enjoy? I would read the hell out of a story like that!

I think it was more common in that time period that people married for reasons other than love, though I don't think it was a common custom to promote friendship over love within a marriage. It's just that women were often traded in that regard--and land deal between two men might include the joining of their families, a leftover practice from Great Britain and kings and queens, no doubt. Convenience, security, etc, could be just as motivating as good old fashioned love, especially if one of the parties was poor. Of course the Salvatores were wealthy, so there were many girls who would have wanted Damon and Stefan for that reason alone, forget that they might have found them attractive. And it's totally probable that Mrs. Salvatore married Mr. Salvatore for just that reason.

And yes, the next part (and thus, probably too long to be tacked on to this part) will be about Damon and Elena communicating better, both in bed and out of it. Curse you.

Well, of course people married for reasons other then love. But it doesn't mean that they didn't pay attention to the relationship itself. It's not "you should marry someone who's your friend", it's "you should try your best to be a good friend for your spouse, because that's how you can achieve happiness". And marrying within your social class was also considered a good chance for happiness. Many people genuinely thought that you can't be happy if you marry an outsider. When you came from a wealthy family yourself, marrying a rich guy wasn't just a way to make sure you'll have pretty dresses and food on your table. It was a way to make sure you'll spend your life with someone with similar tastes, similar values, similar beliefs.

Whoops, I geeked out on you again... Sorry!

I have this whole scenario in my head where Elena just makes out with him...like kissing to no end. To show him you don't have to orgasm to enjoy it, you know? Like it's been so long since he did that, he genuinely doesn't remember. And he uses his power over her body against her, winding her up and making her come when he doesn't want to deal with what's really going on between them (THEY HAVE A RELATIONSHIP, OMG!).

You better write me Damon-can't-come fic after this. Just sayin'...

OMG YES to kissing to no end. Love the mental image. And Elena would do just that. Not because she's so young or anything, but because she simply likes to kiss.

And he uses his power over her body against her, winding her up and making her come when he doesn't want to deal with what's really going on between them

So right! Because Damon uses his body as a tool. He would literally (excuse my harsh language) whore himself out to Elena in exchange for a chance to avoid dealing with his emotions. His body doesn't matter. It doesn't matter whether or not he wants to have sex. Headcase.

You better write me Damon-can't-come fic after this.

I hoped I could write it this week! But I'm blocked :(.
