I asked if you wanted it and you said "go for it", I went for it.
And it wasn't just because you didn't agree with me on one post - I've spent the last 2 years as a mod getting flack because I won't act as language police/comment monitor for grown adults. There are 57,000 better uses of my time than scolding grown adults for calling other grown adults names or having to remind people that there are rules in a community, or responding to rude comments from people who can't handle being told that they've broken a rule.
But you're welcome to hold on to the story that I "flounced" and "dumped it in [your] lap".
Seriously. I get not edging in on every single dispute and rebuking people and stuff, a mod's job isn't to make sure everyone agrees with one another all the time, but I've seen a lot of nastiness here being tolerated. It's the mod's job to make sure it isn't.
I'm sad to see you go, as I'm also someone who is happy enough with a rather easygoing comm where adults (with exceptions of really bad trolls) are expected to behave like that... the internet per se isn't a safe space, and I don't see why a comm should need to be holier than reasonably pc (unless it's some sort of abuse survivors' comm maybe). I definitely appreciate bans on abusive people, but a simple temporary solution for dealing with trolls is also to not respond to them for threads and threads on end. I can understand why you have enough, thanks for sticking around as long as you did. The problem with being a mod is that it is not possible to be liked by everyone and do everything in a way that satisfies everyone. It's a bit like a vet who will never really be loved by all the pets treated, and a pediatric doc who will likely see as many horrified kids as happy ones
( ... )
This. It wasn't just a passive allowing people saying anything they want. It was actively stopping people from calling out offensive language. It was not just not a safe place, it was actively trying to make it not safe.
