Role-playing like this gives ME Goosebumps!

Aug 03, 2009 13:04

On Gaia, in a for-the-lulz, back-and-forth profile comment role play that eventually turned into serious business.

For a little bit of context, I was playing Slappy of Goosebumps fame. Anyone who grew up in the nineties would know that he is not at all a nice character, and is in fact cunning, manipulative, exceptionally rude, dominant, and treats people horribly. The friend I was playing with---I shall call her Chips---was playing with her naive, innocent, easily impressionable OC. And because this OC was so naive, innocent, and impressionable, she was easy to take advantage of. This also made her appear to be a damsel in distress that needed a knight in shining armor to come save her.

First off, I do not mind if other people want to join in. I do encourage other players when there are openings, and there certainly was an opening. There was a person who was commenting back and forth with Chips who saw a comment I posted recently to her. Apparently, he was not pleased that Slappy, true to his name, slapped Chips. So he decided to jump in.

He came in and set up a challenge (read: threatened to throw my little puppet into a furnace). I shrugged it off. The comment was open enough that I had a few options, and I kind of liked the thought of a challenge. So I replied, which, given the nature of this character, was basically a taunt. And here, I also warned him in my action text that if he was to carry out that threat, there was going to be a drastic consequence.

This was when he decided he had to be the big damn hero. For this reason, I shall call him the White Knight.

At the time, I was also still playing with Chips. And because she read the magic words and woke Slappy up, he decided that she was going to be his slave because he does that. It's in practically every Night of the Living Dummy book. Since this is going on between my and Chips' profiles, and the White Knight is following along, he decided he needed to defend Chips. He goes on this tired spiel of how slavery is wrong, and then he set my character on fire. No warning, no attempt to do anything, no chance for me to try to make an escape.

Wait a minute. A bit of deja-vu here. I have a sadistic, creepy character, the other RP-er is a variant of the damsel-in-distress, and what looks like a jealous stalker boyfriend just entered the picture and "saved" the girl via godmod. Have I not dealt with an idiot like this before...?

Oh, yeah. Allan.

Back up, rewind. Did I not just mention that destroying him would result in a drastic consequence? And the fact that you just set him on fire will destroy his body? Well, guess what. That happened in canon once (albeit with a buzzsaw...). Which means I get to act out the IC consequence, gaspshockhorror. And that consequence is Slappy takes over a host body when his body is destroyed. And I chose Chips, because to get rid of him, White Knight has to kill her, and I knew he would not want to do that.

Devious Dummy: 1. White Knight: 0.

Now, what I did can be considered a godmod in and of itself, so it was probably a bit of bad RP-ing on my part. For the record, though, I intended to end it there and pick up where Chips and I were before the White Knight showed up, because it was now obvious that he was only in it to be the hero, and was not going to play fairly. I also regretted giving the dog a bone and allowing him to have his godmod. Stupid me. I also godmodded a little to counter his godmod. Stupid, stupid me. And I already had experience with morons like this and should have just ignored it and moved on. Stupid, stupid, stupid me. But I digress.

Since he is determined not to lose, White Knight keeps going on and on about the whole slavery thing, like how slavery is not legal in the U.S., that Slappy is no threat to the world (world: no. Kid who has the misfortune of owning him: yes, and moreso if a girl), even going so far as to define the illegality of slavery. He further used such charming terms of endearment in his need to one-up me, such as how he would leave me "in an ass crack of shatered hopes" (spelling error left intact) and that I was a "dumbass."

I point out that 1) Slappy doesn't care, 2) he's a dummy. He is not a human, and therefore cannot be held accountable by the court of law, and 3) Try using "the dummy did it" in court, because it worked so well with all the protagonists in the books who tried to tell their parents...

Devious Dummy: 2. White Knight: 0.

Then White Knight, ever determined to win the battle, goes so far as to say that I could not take over Chips without her permission with a quote that looked like it was from D&D or something:

White Knight: Watch, acording to the rules of restoration,

"Any soul that is untaimed cannot dominate the body of another unless the victim says the words to intake the untaimed soul"

So,the spirit isnt really inside of you

Again, all errors left intact.

Well, this isn't D&D or whatever it was you quoted. This is Goosebumps, which means we are following R.L. Stine's canon, and Stine's canon leaves the victim with no choice. I know that, Chips knows that (and bless her heart, she even acted appropriately when she read my comment that I took over her body pre-retcon). You are the only one who is out of the loop here.

Devious Dummy: 3. White Knight: 0.

By this time, I was fed up. I had already made it clear that all his actions were now moot, and Chips and I had by this point decided to retcon everything that happened when he jumped in, and continue from where we were before. This was partially because I was tired of this idiot, partially because the takeover thing would have left her with nothing to do (which I remembered after-the-fact), and partially because I was tired of trying to play with Chips to be interrupted with the White Knight trying to one-up me after he already lost.

In what I hoped would be a final response, I told White Knight in OOC text that I was tired of arguing with him because he kept using the same points (slavery is wrong, the possession could not have happened, etc.) over and over again. At this point, we were going in circles, it was hard to keep up with Chips because he kept posting pointless garbage to get the upperhand, and that he basically killed all the tension that Chips and I had built up before he came in. I even told him that he could still play, just so long as he did not barge or godmod like he did.

Yet the White Knight still pressed on.

White Knight: I'm "barging" in you say?

Look,I know you and Chips are doing a little roleplay but I truly care for her and I dont want you to slap her around like shes your little hussy OK?

And dont call me a "knight in shining armor" OK? That makes you, and me look like pffff OK?

Let me point out all the "you're doing it wrong" pieces in this statement:

-Yes, you were barging, and I already explained why in my last comment.
-"I truly care for her." That screams IC/OOC line-blurring.
-I already explained to you a long time ago that it's in-character for him to do. The avatar, signature, and profile also should have been a dead giveaway. Is it that hard to understand, or do I have to find smaller words? Nothing you do will make him stop: Slappy wants slaves, and he will treat people as such. He's a bastard like that.
-You ARE a knight dashing to the rescue of the fair maiden. And it could have worked out nicely if you hadn't GODMODDED and KILLED THE TENSION. Sheesh, we could have at least had a bit of fisticuffs before you brought out the flamethrower.
-Actually, that makes me look like I'm berating a little child who does not know when to quit.

Why I have not put this idiot on Ignore yet, I have no idea myself, but it may be relate to my compulsive desire to have the last word, and that I really, really hate having to Ignore people. Plus in a masochistic way, I do try to give people chances. Sometimes, it actually pays off (someone I once dreaded RP-ing with is now one of my favorite people ever to RP with because of this kind of reform). Other times, like now, it comes back to bite me.

In any case, it was time for the big guns.

Me: ((IC/OOC line. You're crossing it. What occurs in role play [IC, or in-character] =/= real life [OOC, or out-of-character], i.e., it's not really happening to her; it's pretend. And since it's pretend, you don't need to "protect" her.

NEWSFLASH: Slappy happens to slap people [and do worse things like, oh, throw out insults when someone is trying to use him in a ventriloquist act or make his owner's parents think she's insane]. It's an in-character action. And you ARE a fucking knight in shining armor. These are the [usually] boyfriends who jump in and have to be the big damn hero, especially if they didn't have any involvement beforehand. Chips was doing just fine on her own. Both of us are playing characters. We're doing what is in-character for our characters to do. We don't need some jerk like you who can't differentiate fantasy from reality jumping in and throwing a wrench into our fun, which you effectively did.

Also. Before you start spewing out your little "loopholes," try a little thing called LOOKING AT THE FUCKING SOURCE MATERIAL. If Slappy takes someone over, they have get no say. He just takes, they lose themselves, he has their body. THE END. Bride of the Living Dummy. Look it up sometime.

Now. Knock it off. I don't want to have to use my Ignore button on a shiny new account.))

Sheesh, it would have only taken him a few seconds to find the Wikipedia entry (part of which is in my profile and credited with a link) before attempting to use a loophole. But then again, I suppose a little research is a bit much to ask when it comes to Gaians outside of my friends. I guess I am a bit spoiled in that the group I hang out with will actually go out and do their homework on an unfamiliar canon. God forbid I expect the same of anyone else!

In any case, he then replied with the following:

White Knight: Temper, temper, slappy.I wasnt per say "protecting" her, I was role-playing you idiot!

And watch your language! I havnt seen that much taint in the english language since I saw that one incident at the comedy club with the actor that played cramer

So,In a result,I'm sorry for the butting in that I did and hope that we can be friends in the near future. You know for a moment there I actually though that you were upseting her.I'm impressed by your acting skills. So,once again I'm sorry

So...your idea of role-playing is to be the hero and not let anyone else get a move in, and when you get your ass kicked, to try to find any way to win anyway. And the fact that you pretty much destroyed an evil dummy who was bent on making Chips his slave was certainly not "protecting" her from him. Gotcha.

And for someone who was cussing me out on my profile, I found it kind of hilarious that he was telling ME to watch my language. Hey, White Knight. I put up with you for longer than I should have before I dropped the F bomb, whereas you did it to try to insult me (which didn't work). Bit of a difference.

And to that last bit...if ANY of it was serious, and Chips felt she was in any danger, I would have been reported a long time ago. There are two little things that would have saved a lot of trouble here:

1) Back reading some of the comments. I know, I know, it would take a lot of work to click a button to go back a whole page on both mine and Chips' profiles and see that a) Chips started the RP, and there was quite a bit of build-up before anything happened, and b) several of our comments had tiny-text asides/OOC clarification/conversation.

2) PM-ing me or Chips before doing anything major. I know that I was stupid to let him get away with that one move (only because I knew I could counter it with a drastic IC consequence that I DID warn him about), but that does not excuse that he basically left me no other option, nor did he ask me or Chips if she could be saved at that moment. While I do not mind playing things out to see where they go, those kind of decisions are the kind you show some courtesy for.

Oh, and to top it all? At some point (rather late in the game), Chips PM-ed me to apologize for this idiot. She basically said that she commented on his avatar once, and since then, he's practically been stalking her. With this knowledge combined with how he acted, I now consider this even creepier and worse than Allan. At least Allan actually knew the girl he was defending so passionately. This jerk was just trying to impress Chips. And it failed, because she accepted my offer of a retcon and put him on Ignore. >3

Devious Dummy: 4. White Knight: 0.

In any case, I think I finally got through to him. At least he apologized.

Tl;dr: White Knight comes in to save the day, gets his ass kicked, is a spoilsport about losing, gets his ass kicked again three more times, and loses the girl he was trying to protect to the one he was protecting her from.

godmoding, research is your friend, little miss crankypants, drama llama, buy a clue, gaia rp
