I think I may have to disagree with some of the OP's points this time. My partner and I live together, and we like to rp together. Because we are always on at the same time, our characters spend a lot of time together and often form relationships because of that.
We've been together for three years, and I truly believe it will continue for many years more, but I think if we had a major breakup, we'd quietly drop the characters without fuss. Of course, the OP's complaint sounds like this is a temporary new shiny rather than a committed partner, which will have an effect.
And this is the Shiny. No development, just all of a sudden they're together in a horribly abusive relationship at the same time that the players got together. Like, it didn't even start off well and declined, it started dysfunctional and abusive.
I think the issue here has more to do with the partner's treatment of the subject and his/her character. I actually think that dude needs to be the one getting reamed by the group-- if he is getting mad when his partner's character interacts with other characters in the game, he is the one with the problem.
