Penelope's message had sounded really urgent. So Hurley found himself rushing down to her room and knocking, trying not to sound like he was mildly worried when he did it.

Penelope had just set aside her water pot when that knock sounded and she looked over in surprise, not at all expecting him so soon. Or possibly tonight.

"Hurley. You're here."

"You did say soon," Hurley said. "I didn't want you to be... like... waiting or anything."

"Oh, yes, of course. How thoughtful of you." She blinked, clasped her hands together. "Please, come in. Sit. Would you like a cold beverage?"

"I'll take some water, I guess?" Hurley said, going to sit down. "If that's cool."

"Yes, sure. I have several bottles." She took one from the mini-fridge and stepped towards him, handing it over. Penelope then sat near but kept a respectable distance.

"I... wanted to talk to you about something," she began. "If you want your water first, I can wait until your thirst is satisfied."

Yes, she was stalling.

Hurley felt his heart start thudding a little. That really didn't sound like a good start of a conversation.

"How about we just talk?" he said, not wanting to just delay whatever this was.

She had a feeling he was going to say that.

"Alright. Well, you know how I told you I was going home to visit during the week between summer sessions?"

"Yeah," Hurley said. "It's coming up and stuff."

"Yes, it is," she smiled a small smile. "Two weeks. But I... I am not going home to simply visit. No. No there is a specific reason." And she looked at him expectantly, like he was supposed to just get what she was trying to say without her actually having to say it.

"...somebody's birthday?" Hurley said, sipping at the water.

At least she wasn't used to expectations. "No, Hurley," she replied, lowering her eyes, "not exactly. Do you... remember when I broke my engagement to Edward?"

Hurley nodded. He knew it. The instant he'd talked about this stuff with someone else, it was all gonna go south on him.

"Yeah?"

Penelope would be surprised to learn that he'd spoken of this stuff to someone else. Not that she would blame him.

Still not meeting his eyes, she continued, nearly whispering now. "It's not broken anymore, Hurley. I'm... there is to be a wedding."

Yep. He totally jinxed himself.

"...Guess it's too late for an invitation, huh?"

He barely was keeping it together, here.

"I'm so sorry," she said, ducking her head even more. "I'm so sorry, Hurley. It was never my intention... I didn't want to hurt you."
