Sometimes, I have insane ideas.
So I'm trolling the interwebs, looking for inspiration for my Advanced Fiction class. I surf Wikipedia for random stuff, just like I do every day. I land on the page about Dubai. Ever since I read an article about it in National Geographic, I've been totally fascinated by Dubai. It just seems like such a bizarre mixture of insane consumerism, ridiculous wealth, extreme poverty and horrible human rights violations. Granted, I know very little about the UAE in reality; that's just the impression I've gotten from the things I've read. But still it interests me. Anyway...I was reading the Wikipedia page when the thought struck me: wouldn't it be cool to go to grad school in Dubai?
Obviously, there are a couple of very big obstacles here:
1. I'm bad at traveling.
2. Besides Canada and Mexico, I've never been outside the U.S.
3. I'm an American woman and a lesbian; somehow I don't think I'd feel comfortable in the UAE.
4. For the aforementioned reasons, it could be potentially dangerous for me to go there.
5. From what I can tell, none of the universities in Dubai I'm interested in offer film programs.
6. I'm a chickenshit and would probably never do it.
Still...I think it would be an incredible experience.
