The Batman has basically kidnapped Dick Grayson following the murder of the young circus performer's parents. The result is a wild car chase, and a dialogue between Dick and Bruce that is uncomfortable, bordering on creepy. This is the stuff of which DCU slash fanfic is made. There are some good moments here, including a clever recap sequence involving Vicky Vale and Alfred, but this is Frank Miller. My expectations run a bit higher than just a few good moments. And not to nitpick, but the Batman's technology seemed too elaborate for a "Year 1"-era story like this. No complaints on the art side. Jim Lee continues to turn in spectacular work. Too bad the writing on this just never seems to get on track.
