Outwit. Outplay. Free Food.
At 11am on Saturday, July 16, twelve tribe members assembled in the Dungeon Lounge at St. Paul's United College. After eating a vegetarian lunch of pasta salad, apples, and cookies, Jeff Probst (played by Margaret) gave the contestants their instructions for getting started and announced the teams:
Harkonnen (black): Rodney (head), Keith, Amanda, Alex, Graeme, and Gaelan
Atreides (white): Andy (head), Zahid, Magic Dave, Jon, Patricia, and Sarah
12 contestants, 2 tribes, 1 sole survivor.
Round 1
In the first round, the teams proceeded to the Goose Field for the inaugural group challenge. The teams participated in a seven-legged race down the hill towards the creek. The two teams started off evenly, but Harkonnen fell behind very quickly and could not keep up; to complicate matters, Alex began trailing the rest of her team. Atreides finished as the clear first-place winners, sending Harkonnen to the individual immunity challenge.
At the individual immunity challenge, each member of Harkonnen had to solve an obscure riddle. After reading the riddle and receiving four clues from Jeff, everyone was stumped. Keith eventually guessed answered correctly with the answer of "pi". (If anyone remembers the riddle, could you let me know?)
Having the immunity idol, Keith was safe from being voted off while the rest of Harkonnen was fair game.
Voting: Amanda (3), Alex (3)
Voting (tie-breaker): Amanda (2), Alex(2)
Following two tied votes, Amanda and Alex engaged in a best-of-three series of Rock Paper Scissors. Amanda won handily, sending Alex home as the first outcast.
Round 2
In the second round, the two teams competed in a game of Capture the Flag. After much whining and complaining, Margaret acquiesced to Harkonen’s request that Atreides have one player sit out. With Zahid sitting out, a rousing game of Capture the Flag began with the "flags" (extra buffs) hung from trees. After a valiant effort by Harkonnen, Atreides outran Harkonnen and won the second group immunity challenge, sending Harkonnen to the individual immunity challenge.
The individual immunity challenge took the longest time out of any of the challenges. There were seven word puzzles hidden around the college, one in Morse code, another in binary, another in pictorial form, another an anagram, and so on. The seven puzzles (hidden in the Sunken Lounge, Games Room, Dungeon Lounge, Oasis Lounge, Newspaper Lounge, TV Lounge, and Boardroom) were challenging and the contestants spent over 45 minutes trying to decipher them. Margaret then ended the game, at which point Rodney and Graeme had successfully solved five puzzles each.
Being in a tie, Graeme and Rodney played a best-of-three set of Rock Paper Scissors, which Graeme won, giving him the immunity idol.
Voting: Amanda (2), Gaelan (2), Keith (1)
Voting (tie-breaker): Amanda (2), Gaelan (1)
Gaelan survived the second round of voting, sending Amanda home as the second outcast of the game. The four 3A CSers had clearly banded together to ensure their survival.
Round 3
In the third round, the two teams participated in a game of Pictionary in the Boardroom. Each team had one illustrator (Rodney and Sarah) and three guessers. Each team had a different set of seven words to draw, all of which were Dune references. Although Harkonnen had taken an early lead with the first six words, it got stuck on the last word ("greed"). There was some confusion as to when Atreides had finished and if there was interference from the illustrator (which happened at roughly the same time as when Harkonnen guessed its last word), so the two teams engaged in a tiebreaker round where they had to guess the word "red". Atreides won, sending Harkonnen to the individual immunity challenge.
The individual immunity challenge was to drink two bottles of fruit punch. Keith's strategy of drinking two bottles at once failed very quickly, and Rodney was unable to stomach more than one bottle, which left Graeme and Gaelan to battle it out. Graeme beat out Gaelan by a small amount of juice, giving Graeme the immunity idol.
Voting: Rodney (1), Keith (1), Gaelan (2)
Rodney and Keith survived the voting, sending Gaelan home as the third outcast of the game. Within the group of four 3A CSers, the three taking CS 341 had banded together in a show of solidarity. Harkonnen was getting tired of losing and starting to lose hope.
Round 4
In the fourth round, the two teams participated in a scavenger hunt around the college. Each team was given a list of seven dune-themed items to look for (ring, spice, worm, flag, coat of arms, sand, and dart) and bring back to the cafeteria. Harkonen’s three members won the challenge easily, even through Keith had run to St. Jerome's to gather the sand (his plan was to run to the SLC volleyball court and back for sand, but he saw some sand and a worm at SJU), sending Atreides to their first individual immunity challenge.
The individual immunity challenge was a balancing competition. foosball where team members were gradually eliminated as they lost matches. After a few rounds of play, Andy had the strongest legs and emerged as the winner, guaranteeing him immunity at the challenge.
Voting: Zahid (4), Jon (2)
Jon survived the voting, sending Zahid home as the fourth outcast of the game and the first of his tribe.
Round 5
In the fifth round, popsicles were scattered across the Sunken Lounge. Each team member had one minute to gather as minute bags many sticks as possible into Jumbo Video popcorn bags in one minute; the average of the number of Popsicle sticks each team member collected would determined the team's score. All but one of the Atreides team mates gathered greater than 100 sticks, while all of the Harkonnen team mates gathered fewer than 100. Hence, Atreides won the challenge, sending Harkonnen to yet another individual immunity challenge.
In the individual immunity challenge, each Harkonnen team member had to complete a
Sudoku puzzle in the Cafeteria. After about 20 minutes, Graeme completed his puzzle, giving him immunity at the challenge.
Since Keith could only vote for Rodney and Rodney could only vote for Keith, Graeme cast the sole vote. He used a deck of cards to make a pseudo-random decision.
Voting: Keith (1)
Rodney survived the voting, sending Keith home as the fifth outcast of the game and the fourth of his tribe. The 3A CSers who were taking CS 341 and who also were dons survived the vote.
Round 6
In the sixth round, old tribal alliances were cast away as the Atreides merged with whatever was left of Harkonnen. Corrino was the new tribe name. Since there was only one tribe, all of the remaining challenges were individual.
In the immunity challenge, the seven remaining contestants played a game of poker played in the Boardroom. The blinds increased every five minutes (small: $5, $25, $50, $100), which allowed for a faster game progression. Sarah was eliminated first, followed by Jon, Patricia and Rodney in the same round, Andy, and Graeme. This left Magic Dave as the winner of immunity.
Voting: Jon (2), Graeme (3), Andy (1), Dave (1 - spoiled)
Margaret asked the group about why Dave had received a vote when he clearly held immunity; Sarah had missed most of the game and had forgotten to ask who had won. As such, the vote was spoiled and the result was based on the six remaining ballots. Atreides had made their choice to eliminate Graeme, one of only two team mates from the Harkonnen tribe. Jon and Andy survived the vote, sending Graeme home as the sixth outcast of the game and the fifth of his original tribe.
Round 7
In the seventh round, the challenge was very simple: find the immunity idol that had been hidden somewhere on the second floor of the college. The only restriction was that it was neither in any locked room nor in the residence wing. Patricia found the idol in the Library behind the card catalogue, securing immunity for herself.
Voting: Jon (2), Andy (1), Sarah (3)
Jon and Andy survived the voting, sending Sarah home as the seventh outcast of the game and the second of her original tribe. It is widely suspected that she was eliminated because she voted for the immunity winner in the previous round.
Round 8
In the eighth round, contestants were taken down to the Chapel foyer to wait for their turn to navigate a maze. The cafeteria had been rearranged into a maze by creating paths and cul-de-sacs using the tables and chairs, through which contestants had to navigate and find three people (Lloyd, Michael, Paul) in the shortest time. Each contestant had a different strategy: Patricia navigated the maze by following the boundaries on the right-hand side; Rodney followed the maze by following the boundaries on the left-hand side; Jon followed the maze by moving in random directions and hitting his crotch against the obstacles (at the end, he started walking backwards because his front was too bruised from hitting tables and chairs); Dave employed a similar strategy as his brother but with less running into obstacles; and Andy charged through the maze, not letting any obstacle get in the way. After it was clear that Andy would not win, he was given directions on how to find the remaining person.
Patricia: 2:57:13
Rodney: 5:07:81
Jon: 6:35:71
Dave: 5:11:52
Andy: 3:55:40 +
Patricia was the winner of the immunity, leaving all of the other contestants up for elimination.
Voting: Rodney (3), Jon (2)
Jon survived the vote yet again, sending Rodney home as the eighth outcast of the game and the last of his original tribe. The Harkonnen tribe had been pagonged, leaving only members of Atreides in the final four.
Round 9
In the ninth round, contestants went to the parking lot to balance on the concrete curb on one foot in a test of endurance.
Andy: 0:48
Patricia: 2:15
Jon: 4:05
Dave: 4:05 +
Dave was the winner of the immunity, leaving all of the other contestants up for elimination.
Voting: Patricia (3), Jon (1)
Jon survived another vote, sending Patricia home as the ninth outcast of the game and the third of her original tribe. It is suspected that she was eliminated because of her track record of winning immunity challenges in the previous two rounds.
Round 10
In the tenth round, contestants went to the Games Room for a shooting competition. Contestants had to shoot five darts from a Nerf gun at a picture of 15 pool balls. For each ball that the contestant hit, they would receive the number of points that the ball was worth. The person with the greatest number of points won the competition.
Magic: 0 + 0 + 7 + 0 + 1 = 8
Jon: 14 + 0 + 0 + 9 + 9 = 32
Andy: 0 + 7 + 0 + 10 + 0 = 17
Jon was the winner of immunity and cast the sole vote. Since he couldn't decide between his brother and his next-room neighbour, he asked each contestant to pick a number from 1 to 10. Dave chose 5 and Andy chose 6, meaning that Dave won since the number was 4.
Voting: Andy (1)
Dave survived the vote, sending Andy home as the tenth outcast of the game and the fourth of his original tribe. The only set of siblings in the game remained in the game, ready to face the final vote. All twelve survivors then took a break to enjoy a barbecue and discuss how the game went.
Round 11
In the eleventh and final round, the remaining contestants were each given one minute to make a speech to plea to the ten outcasts forming the jury. The jury then voted, sealing the fate of who was the sole survivor.
Voting Sequence: Jon, Magic, Jon, Magic, Jon, Magic, Jon, Magic, Magic, Jon
Voting Results: Jon (5), Magic (5)
Because of the tie, the two contestants engaged in a sudden-death balancing match on the carpet of Sunken Lounge. Jon held fell over after about 3 seconds, leaving Magic Dave as the sole survivor.
