One of the first things you noticed stepping into the carpeted lobby of SAB besides the distinct piano keys in the air and dozens of pointe shoes clacking in unison, was our security guard Carlton Shaw.

His age was a mystery. He was Jamaican. He was legit. He normally kept guard behind the lobby desk when he wasn't roaming around the floor or calling up his family back in Jamaica on the pay phone. He was promptly there to open the school doors at nine am and left no later than seven thirty pm. He was a constant comforting presence to the school. Someone you took for granted. Whatever happened, seeing Carlton was a normal routinely day at SAB.

Out of anyone left at that school, I could always count on Carlton for a friendly chat or a warm "Hey". In a floor buried in bullshit of drama and politics, he knew what was going on. He knew where to look for the good hearts, who the good kids were.

Once upon a time, my friend Ellany and I used to take constant naps on the lobby couches in between rehearsals. One usual afternoon we fell asleep leaning on each other, dazed by the warm sunlight. When we woke up, we found a piece of paper taped on the couch that simply said, "SLEEPING BEAUTIES" and an arrow that pointed to us. It cracked us up, and it made us grin even more when we saw that the culprit had indeed, been Carlton.

He passed away last night. We don't know why. He was at the school absolutely fine until nine pm last night, on account of rehearsals. He's been at SAB for, I don't even know how long. Forever. I've seen him every day from the first day at SAB nine years ago.

This post has a point.

This message keeps getting stressed, over and over again but it's true. Please, don't take anything in your life for granted. You never know. You really don't.

rip carlton.
