With dusk falling, common sense suggested it would be a good time to get inside for the night. Even a normal wood had plenty of dangers by night, and if Leaf had learned one thing in the past few months, it was that this wood was anything but normal. Granted, sitting atop the walls was at least a better place than somewhere outside them, but even so, it was the kind of thing he should really keep to doing when he had his wits about him, and not when he was so...distracted.
But sometimes, one just needed to have a good sulk.
He'd tried to keep looking on the bright side when he first stopped noticing Celice around. He'd tried to be patient about it, because he could certainly understand that sometimes you needed a little time to think without distractions. But he had to figure Celice would've at least told him something, given the kind of place this was, and so then he'd looked in the likely places (not to mention plenty of the unlikely places).
After a couple of weeks, even Leaf had to admit defeat. Celice was gone.
Home, he very stubbornly told himself. There was absolutely no way Celice would've wandered off and gotten eaten by something. He was home, doing what needed to be done, and --
-- and Leaf was still here.
He glanced down at the sword that lay across his lap, sighing quietly. The only link he had back to home, now that he was on his own again. Even if they'd only known each other in person since arriving here, it was amazing how fast he'd gotten used to having his cousin around.
And where did that leave him now?
