Max wasn't one of the people quick to complain about a ton of incoming monsters.  Having something around whose face she could rearrange with her fist had been a nice outlet, but none of it had managed to change the inescapable fact that this place was a prison, and that this time there was no easy way to break out.

She'd been out of the loop back ( Read more... )

She wasn't the only one who made a habit of sitting on roofs. Mogget had climbed up intending to move between the cabins and normally he would have avoided anyone else. But he recognised the girl. She'd been somewhat helpful when he first arrived.

He picked his way towards her. "Hmm... Max?"

Max was a little surprised to see the thing coming towards her across the rooftops, especially when she recognized it. It was easy enough for her to see in the dark: thanks to that good old feline DNA.

"Got it in one," she said, with a smirk. "... Mogget, right?"

"Yes." The cat stopped beside her, also looking out across the barracks. "Do you make a habit of sitting on the roof?"

"I like high places," she said with a shrug. "Plus, it sorta reminds me of home. Somethin' I did a lot of back there."

"Unusual for a human," he remarked. Some of them were downright terrible in high places. If they weren't clumsy, they were nervous.

"Maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions," she retorted. It wasn't something she'd probably openly be glib about, but this was a talking cat, which... really threw out most of the rules.

Mogget turned to look at her, tail twitching.

"Meaning?"

"Nobody said I was human." Max uncoiled herself enough to get to her feet, and began walking along the edge of the roof like it was a balance beam, with way too much grace and poise for any human who wasn't a trained tightrope walker.

Watching her, Mogget had no difficulty believing that. The way she moved reminded him of... well, himself.

"Go on," he said. "Enlighten me."

"Mostly human," she explained. "But a little bit of of column B, C, and D in the mix too."

He licked a paw. "Your parentage must be fascinating."

"Don't get any weird ideas about it. Most of my 'parentage'? Was in a test tube." She sounded more matter of fact about it then bitter, but... she sort of sounded jaded in general, so it was hard to tell how she felt, really.

"A test tube," Mogget repeated, puzzled. He had to guess at the meaning of that. "Something a little less than natural...?"

"Less just say these genes are designer," she clarified.

Again, Mogget had difficulty understanding her. He didn't like it, not understanding. He knew almost everything worth knowing about his world, or so he liked to think. Now he'd crossed the Wall and found himself in an entirely foreign country.

"Do you mean designed?" he asked at length. "You were deliberately created... for what purpose?"

"To be a soldier," she said with a shrug. "Fight somebody's battles for 'em."
