Max wasn't one of the people quick to complain about a ton of incoming monsters. Having something around whose face she could rearrange with her fist had been a nice outlet, but none of it had managed to change the inescapable fact that this place was a prison, and that this time there was no easy way to break out.
She'd been out of the loop back here for so long that it'd been worth a trip back to the barracks from the castle, and now she was sitting on the roof of her old cabin, looking out across the barracks at the wall. She found herself wishing that the wall was the only thing between her and freedom. Between her and the person back home she desperately wanted to see.
But it wasn't. The woods, the fairy magic that controlled them, and the sadistic minds that were behind that magic - they were all things Max didn't know how to fight or how to even start to overcome. And even if she made it back, there was still the virus that she'd unwittingly passed onto Logan. Alec claimed he was alright, but she didn't know how far she trusted that definition.
She'd kept Alec - everybody actually - at an arm's length since she'd gotten here, but she was starting to wonder if the only way she'd ever get out was to open herself up to someone else long enough to plot together.
Then again, the last time she'd done that, she'd gotten a nice big fat knife in the back.
Now she sat on the roof, waffling like she'd been doing for the past few weeks, watching people pass by below.
Maybe it was time to risk another betrayal.
