Chapter 5

Lex’s eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed in disbelief.

“Clark… you think you’re an alien?  From another planet?”

“I know I am.”

“How is that possible?” he asked, his expression incredulous.  “I mean, look at you.  You’re as human as human can be, and I’m not just talking about how you look here.”

Clark’s lips curved in a wry smile.  “That’s kind of you to say.”

“It’s the truth,” Lex insisted.

“The truth is that I’m from a planet called Krypton which was destroyed shortly after I was born,” Clark replied.  “My parents were able to send me to Earth just before it imploded.”

Lex stared at him intently, mulling over the information he’d just received.  Clark swallowed, curious as to what was going on in his friend’s brain.  It wasn’t everyday he shared his deepest secret with someone, and Lex… well, considering what had just transpired between them, he would have told him the truth even if he hadn’t almost set his ceiling on fire.

But hearing that the man you’d just been intimate with was an alien wasn’t something Lex heard every day, so Clark could understand the protracted silence.  Plus, he noticed that Lex was still holding his hands, which was a good sign.

“Why earth?” Lex eventually asked.

“Identical anatomical composition.  Plus, the rays of the yellow sun have a fortifying effect on my molecular structure.”

“Which is a fancy way of saying it makes you stronger?”

“Practically indestructible.”

“Yet you nearly died a few days ago,” Lex observed.

“The green meteor rocks are actually chunks of kryptonite; radioactive pieces of my home planet,” Clark replied.  “They’re the only thing I know of that can weaken me.”

“Huh,” Lex mused.  “No wonder you flipped out when I said I’d sent a clean-up team to the farm.”

Clark chuckled.  “I’m lucky they didn’t see the ship.”

“Ship?” he echoed.

“The spaceship that brought me here during the meteor shower; it’s been hidden in the storm cellar all these years,” Clark explained.  “After it was almost discovered a couple of years ago, Dad decided we needed to bury it underground so that it would be undetected.  Unfortunately, I was over-exposed to the rocks when I accidentally dug them out.  The rest you know.”

“Well, if it’s any consolation, the clean-up guys didn’t find a ship.”

Clark exhaled slowly.  “That’s a relief.”

Lex slowly stood and walked over to the dresser.  He spent several seconds just staring at his own reflection in the ornate mirror.  When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse.

“The meteor shower,” Lex said hoarsely.  “That was the day I lost my hair.”

“I know.  I’m so sorry.”

Lex’s jaw hardened.  “You have nothing to be sorry for, Clark; you were just a baby.”

“But -”

“None of what happened to me, to any of us, is your fault,” he said sternly.  “Remember that.”

Clark sighed.  “I still can’t help feeling indirectly responsible for changing so many people’s lives.”

“You had no control over your parents’ actions, and they were only doing what any parent would do for their child; the best that they could possibly do.”

“I guess you’re right,” he replied dolefully.

“Of course I am.  I can only dream of having parents that loved me as much as both of yours, biological and adoptive, love you.”

“Lex, I’m sure your father loves you even if he has a strange way of showing it…”

“He could barely stand to touch me,” Lex replied, his eyes stark with the memory of the meteor shower.  “He kept inching away from me, as if I were somehow… contaminated.  Nothing since then has really changed.”

“I’m sorry he ever made you feel less than perfect,” Clark said softly.  “He was wrong; you know he was.”

Lex’s eyes narrowed in thought, then his eyebrow rose as something suddenly occurred to him.

“I remember… I’d forgotten all about it until tonight, but on the day of the meteor shower, my Dad and I… we hitched a ride to the hospital in a car with a young couple and their child; a little boy, about three years old.”

Clark nodded.  “That’s right.”

“I was slipping in and out of consciousness, half crazed with terror, but that little boy… he smiled at me with these big green eyes, and he reached for me.”

Clark nodded.  “Go on.”

“He touched me; he stroked my face, and said something.”  Lex turned to him, his eyes suspiciously bright.  “What did you say to me, Clark?”

Clark simply smiled, and held Lex’s smooth cheek in his palm.

“I said that you were beautiful, Lex,” he whispered.  “You were then, you are now… and you always will be.”

He had never seen Lex cry.

But as he watched those dove-grey eyes fill with tears and slowly trickle down Lex’s face, Clark’s heart all but melted for his friend.

“Hey…” He wrapped his arms around Lex, who clung to him and held him fiercely.  His shoulders shook, and he shuddered as he broke down in tears, years of hurt and rejection finally taking their toll.

“It’s okay,” Clark reassured him, gently stroking his back and holding him close.  “I’m here.  I’m here now.”

Lex continued to weep in his arms.  Eventually the tears subsided, and Clark patiently lifted his hands to Lex’s cheeks and wiped the tears away.

“Feel better?” he asked.

Lex nodded.  “I’ll be okay now.  Thank you.”  He closed his eyes and rested his cheek on Clark’s palm.  “I just realised that you’ve always been there for me, right from the day you landed on this planet.”

“And I always will be.”  He leaned forward and pressed his lips to Lex’s in a gentle kiss.  As they slowly pulled apart, he opened his eyes to see Lex staring at him intently.

“I guess we should talk about… this,” Clark said shyly.  In all the excitement and drama of bringing Lex into the know on his secret, the fact that they’d just been intimate was almost secondary.

But Lex just smiled.  “It’s simple, Clark.  How do you feel about me?”

Clark took a deep breath and just blurted it out.

“I love you.”
