Summary: Kyuhyun thinks he likes girls, he even found himself a girlfriend a few weeks after he enters High School but when his girlfriend's older brother starts to steal his best friend away from him, he found himself not liking it one bit. A story about how Kyuhyun and Kibum got together. Set before
If I sat next to you would you run away? A/N: This was written when I first started to write a couple of years back. I didn't change much coz I was too lazy to rearrange the sentences so it might suck big time and it's unbeta'ed so please bear with me guys.
Previously “No, no, no, no, no. I’m not going on a double date with you.” Kibum huffed and sped up to the bus stand.
“Come on Kibum. It’ll be fun besides, you like Jin Kyoung. You said so yourself but I don’t see you doing anything about it. I’m just giving you a little push.” Kyuhyun caught up with his friend.
Kibum sighed and stop in his track. “I don’t want a push Kyu.”
“Is it wrong of me to want to help my friend along? You need a girlfriend to occupy your time Bummie. I won’t be around much now that I’m dating Eun Ji and you might get bored.” Kyuhyun brushed away a lock of fringe that had fallen over Kibum’s glasses.
“Well maybe I don’t want a girlfriend,” I want you. “and I’m not a kid I can handle myself.” He took a seat. Kyuhyun sat beside him and slung an arm over his neck.
“Okay fine, but we’ve already asked Jin Kyoung and she’s already agreed.” Kyuhyun frowned before continuing. “You don’t have to date her Bummie. Just come out and play. For me?” He pleaded with a persuasive smile.
“Okay.” He replied. “But only because of you.”
Kyuhyun grinned and ruffled his hair. “You need a haircut Bummie.”
“Lay off. I like my hair.” He grumbled.

Kibum winced and glared at Kyuhyun when he stomped his foot from under the table. What the hell Kyu! That hurts! He pursed his lips tightly at the boy beside him.
Talk to the girl. Kyuhyun indicated with a raised eyebrow and cocked his head a fraction towards the girls seated across them in a booth of a cafe.
Kibum rolled his eyes at his friend and thanked his longish hair for hiding his face. As much as he doesn’t want to be here, he doesn’t want Jin Kyoung to feel put out either. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and flashed a megawatt smile at his date.
“So, Jin Kyoung shii, what would you like to have?”
The pretty girl wrinkled her nose at a menu she was perusing with Eun Ji. “I don’t know… maybe I’ll have the strawberry crepe.” She looked up and smiled shyly.
“Is that all? You can order anything you know since Kyu’s paying for everything we’re having.” He quipped nonchalantly.
“Yah!” Kyuhyun thwacked the side of his head.
“Ah~ Kyu… That actually hurts!”
Kyuhyun chuckled and rubbed the spot where he had hit him “Mianhe.”
Kibum leant into the arm that was now draped around his neck. “You sure you don’t want anything else? We could share a fish and chip if you want.” He offered. A rosy tint colored her cheeks as she nodded at his suggestion.
Kyuhyun’s arm slid away from his neck to settle a hand casually on his shoulder as he leant back into the red vinyl of the padded seat, apparently satisfied that he had played nicely along. Kibum doesn’t need to see that the other boy was grinning at the back of his head.
After much deliberation, they finally ordered. Kibum propped both of his elbow on the table and tried not to bore his date since he tends to lapse into silence and listen to the rest of them talk instead.
“So Kibumshii.”
He shifted his attention to the girl before him.
“What do you like to do when you’re free?” She asked.
“He only cares about his books and computer.” Kyuhyun butted in before he could answer. “I swear he’ll rot in that room of his if I am not around to drag him out of there.” Kyuhyun tugged his ear playfully.
Jin Kyoung’s eyes flicked from Kyuhyun to him and lingered on the hand Kyuhyun had unconsciously uses to play with his earlobe and caressed the patch of skin behind the boneless shell of flesh while he talks. Kibum merely smiled when her eyes found his again and her lips curved in amusement.
A waitress came by with their food not long after, enveloping their table with mouth watering aroma of Kibum’s fish and chips.
“Yum! Bummie! Now give me a bite.” Kyuhyun peered up from the plate.
“What? Oh no, you get your own.” Kibum sliced the tender dory fish into bite pieces without delay. “Besides, ladies first.” He pierced a piece with his fork and offered it up to Jin Kyoung who giggled and put it in her mouth.
Eun Ji pouted enviously as her friend ‘Mmmed’ in delightful bliss. “Nah~ Kibumshii, I want a taste too.” She whined.
He smiled and fed her a piece too.
“Yah! Can you feed me now?!” Kyuhyun demanded like a petulant child while munching on stolen fries.
“Okay, okay, Jeez!” He chuckled and watched his friend munch happily.
***
Kibum had thought that going on a double date with Kyuhyun would be a trying experience for him but admittedly, he did enjoy their outing. Eun Ji and Jin Kyoung are both nice and fun and it kind of help that Kyuhyun and Eun Ji chose not to be overtly affectionate in front of them because he doesn’t think he would be able to stand seeing them cooing to each other. And as much as he hated the idea of his friend dating, he couldn’t deny the fact that Kyuhyun really likes Eun Ji.
He had offered to send Jin Kyoung home so that the couple could have some time alone. Kyuhyun had smiled so widely and brightly that he died a little inside.
They would have probably reached Eun Ji’s home by now. Or maybe made a detour? What are they doing right now? Have they kissed yet? It has only been their third date but who knows what kind of dating rules girls have?
He blew out and icy breath. The worst of winter has passed and spring would soon come but the thought of Kyuhyun kissing someone else left him colder than this night.
“We’re here.”
Jin Kyoung’s sweet voice brought him out of his mental torture. “Oh. Okay.” He replied sheepishly. He would have walked on forever if she hadn’t brought him back. He looked around and just then noticed where their feet had led them too. “I didn’t know you live on our street.”
“No I don’t. My dad just bought this house. I actually live with my mom.”
“Oh…” Kibum didn’t know what else to say and awkwardness started to seep in between the silence as they just stood there.
“You don’t really like me do you?” She broke the silence.
Kibum blinked at the statement. “Why shouldn’t I like you? You’re a nice girl.”
“Not the normal like Kibumshii. The ‘like’ like, the romantic like. You don’t feel that way do you?” She eyed him.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized quietly. She just nodded and smiled kindly.
“That’s too bad… I really like you a lot, but it’s okay I guess. It was good while it lasted and I really had fun.” She said good naturedly.
“I’m really sorry.” He apologized again feeling guiltier than he felt a moment ago.
“Hey, it’s okay.” She assured him and touched his arm lightly. “Could you do something for me though?” She bit her lips uncertainly.
“Yes?” Kibum urged.
Jin Kyoung took a deep breath and composed herself. “Could you at least kiss me goodnight?”
Kibum stared at the sweet girl who was worrying with her lips and her eyes wide with anticipation and trepidation at the same time. Her wind struck cheeks steadily becoming redder under his gaze, she began to fidget nervously and looked to anywhere but him as the seconds ticked by.
“Sure.” He said at last.
Her eyes snapped up to him. Her breaths shallow as he inched closer and her lids fluttered closed, tilting up her chin. Kibum gingerly kissed a corner of her mouth gently and backed away watching a small smile curled her lips.
She opened her eyes.
“Thanks.” She whispered and disappears behind the gate.

Kyuhyun was disappointed when Kibum didn’t choose to pursue Jin Kyoung further. He thought that they looked cute and was hoping that they would get together. Then the four of them could have a lot of fun like last week.
He did badger Kibum about it after their date when Eun Ji told him that Jin Kyoung said they will never be a couple but he had simply said that he was no longer interested in her and had made him promise that he would never set him up with anyone again and he had reluctantly agreed of course because Kibum was seriously annoyed after all the questioning.
Having gotten used to Kibum’s mercurial temperament, he wasn’t surprised when his friend had cheekily pestered him about his budding relationship. ‘I don’t kiss and tell’ was what he said with a smirk but in actuality, there was nothing to tell. He had just started dating Eun Ji after weeks of lavishing his attention exclusively to her before she finally agrees to go out with him. He was elated to finally get what he wanted after a thrilling chase but somehow it didn’t last that long as if its novelty had worn off and that even their first kiss was not as mind blowing as he thought it would. However, he does like her and as a person she is better than most girls.
“Oppa, my parents are having a cookout next week when midsummer holiday starts. You have to come.” She kissed his cheek and slid off the table. “You too.” She patted Kibum’s cheek and left with her girls inviting everyone along the way.
Kibum got up and stretched himself.
“I’m starving.” He declared and sauntered off with his hands in his pockets.
“Yah! Wait up!” Kyuhyun barreled into the other boy knocking his glasses askew.
“Gentler Kyu you wanna kill me?” Kibum adjusted his glasses and snaked an arm around his waist just as how his arm is always hanging over Kibum’s shoulder.
“Hi, Kibumshii.” Jin Kyoung greeted him as she passed them outside the class.
“Hey…” Kibum smiled somewhat affectionately. “Are you going to Eun Ji’s cookout?”
“Sure.” She smiled. Her eyes fell on him and flicked back to Kibum. There was something in that smile of hers as she winked at Kibum and went back to class.
“Okay. Come on lover boy.” He drawled and pulled Kibum towards the stairwell. “Are you sure you don’t have a thing for her? Or better. Something going on that I don’t know about?” He teased.
“I can have strictly platonic relationship with girls you know.” Kibum ignored his jibes and ducked from under his arm to descend the stairs.
“Yes, yes.” He mocked with a roll of his eyes.
“I saw that!!!” Kibum called out from somewhere below.
The corner of his lips hitched into a lopsided smile as he descended the stairs following Kibum’s path.

“Kyuhyun! Come here please!” Eun Ji’s dad called out to him
Kyuhyun looked at Eun Ji who just shrugged her shoulders and gave a weak smile. Her father has been casting him an evil eye ever since Eun Ji had introduced him as her boyfriend. He gritted his teeth and approached the adult bravely. “Yes sir?”
“Handle the grill for awhile while I get more meat.” He said briskly and left without so much as a look at him.
He heard her chided her dad to stop embarrassing her.
“Of course not princess, I wouldn’t dream of it.” He cooed to his daughter before turning on to Kyuhyun with a menacing glint in his eyes. “Try not to burn them, son.” He growled and stalked off.
Bloody old man! He thought. Eun Ji came by his side smiling apologetically. “It’s okay.” He said and fanned the burning charcoal, looking around the front yard at his classmates milling about laughing and stuffing their face with barbecued food. Where the hell is Kibum?!
“Is Kibum here yet?” He turned to his girlfriend.
“You’re gonna burn it if you don’t flip those around soon.”
His heart jumped when he heard a familiar voice behind them. “Kibum! Man, what took you so long?!” He grinned at his friend who had suddenly materialized out of nowhere with Jin Kyoung.
Kibum chuckled and quickly flipped the chicken wings over with a tong he took from a foldable table near the griller.
“Eun Ji, where is your dad? How could he leave the guest to tend the grill?” Eun Ji’s mom came out with two trays of seasoned uncooked meats and chicken.
“He said he was getting the meat.” Eun Ji answered.
“Well he didn’t.” She frowned and muttered something along the line of ‘He’s going to get it from me’ under her breath as she walked away.
“So you guys came together.” Eun Ji teased them.
“It’s not what you think girl. I was at my dad’s place so he came to pick me up since Kyu shii had already gone ahead.” Jin Kyoung explained.
“Ooh.. So he picked you up…”
“Girl, shut up, now take me to the bathroom!” Jin Kyoung poked her friend’s side.
Eun Ji’s mom made her appearance again with a crestfallen looking husband in tow. The four of them watched in amazement at Eun Ji’s dad reduced to a timid man in front of his wife. The over bearing lady turned to them with a sugary smile. “Run along now children.”
“Thanks omonim!” An overly delighted Kyuhyun handed the fan to a very sour looking man and pulled Kibum to a table nearby where all kinds of food were laid out. They piled their plate with foods and grabbed a cup of squash. He led Kibum to a few plastic chairs set up around the lawn and sat themselves.
A few of their classmates joined them with similar mountains of food. Some of them were playing some childhood games. Some were just standing around talking and laughing about plans for their vacation in the cool spring afternoon.
“Where are you going?” He asked when Kibum rose from his seat.
“I’m just getting more squash.”
“Cool, get for us too.” Someone said.
“Yah! Don’t order him around.” He turned to Kibum. “Get for us some too.” He added cheekily.
Before he knew it, his head was assaulted with a flying cob of corn. “YAH!” Kibum left him to defend himself against the chortling bunch and surrendered. “Okay, okay.”
He didn’t know how it happened but he suddenly saw Kibum sprawled on the ground and a black haired guy hovering over him. He jumped up and rushed to his friend while the guy helped Kibum up, apologizing profusely and brushed the dirt of his clothes.
“Where’s my glasses.” He heard Kibum say.
The guy stooped down and picked up a pair of glasses from the ground just as he reached them.
“Here.” The guy put the glasses on Kibum carefully.
Kyuhyun narrowed his eyes and pushed the stranger aside. “Are you okay Bummie?” He gripped his friend shoulder and inspected his friend for any sign of damage. Infuriated at the slight abrasion on both of Kibum’s arms, he spun around “Yah! Watch where you’re going!” He glared at the stranger who pointedly ignored him.
“I’m really sorry, here let me help with those wounds.”
“Don’t touch him!” He snarled and swatted the guy’s reaching hand away from Kibum.
“Hey! He’s just trying to be nice okay. No need to be hostile.” A tall guy stepped forward.
“Oppa what happened?” Came Eun Ji’s voice
“Is he your friend? I accidentally knocked into him while horsing around.”
“Who is he?” Kyuhyun demanded.
“He’s my brother Kyu, be nice.” She glared.
“It’s okay Kyu I’m fine it’s just a little scratch.” Kibum calmed him down with just a touch of his hand.
“You sure?” He’s voice softened.
“Okay kids break it up.” Eun Ji’s mom took charge and ushered Kibum into the house. “And clear up the mess!” She called out to the rest.
Eun Ji’s brother gave him a once over and turned to follow his mom. Everyone resumed to whatever they were doing, Eun Ji had stormed off without a word and Jin Kyoung came with a black rubbish bag as he let out a great sigh. He had made a prat out of himself and now Eun Ji’s mad at him.
“Jongwoon oppa is a nice guy actually.” Jin Kyoung said out of the blue.
“Sure.” He muttered and stooped down to pick up the paper cups scattered all over the ground.
“Just leave it Kyu shii, I think you should go after Eun Ji.”
Kyuhyun smiled weakly and whispered and inaudible thanks before tracing back Eun Ji’s step. He found her sitting in a couch in the living room with her arms crossed at her chest and staring at empty space, her face set in a scowl.
“Hey.” Kyuhyun ventured.
Her pretty eyes shifted her gaze to him and her frown deepened.
“I’m sorry.” Kyuhyun seated himself beside her and took her hand in his. “I know it’s my fault for screaming at your brother like that, I’ll apologize to him okay.” He squeezed her hand lightly. “Come on… give me a smile.” He put on a funny face. The corner of her mouth twitched but still no smile. “Oh No!” He gasped and clapped both of his palms on his cheeks “That didn’t make her smile!” She bit her bottom lips trying hard to keep her frown. “Then… How about this!” He dove in and tickled her sides and she instantly burst out into fits of giggles.
“Okay Kyu stop!” She managed in between peals of laughter.
Kyuhyun ceased his torture and pulled her into his arms. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” She finally smiled and kissed him.
“YAH! Be careful or mom will catch you.”
Both of them leaped apart and was relived that it was only Jongwoon and Kibum. Kibum winked at him.
“Oh, It’s only you oppa. Where’s mom?” Eun Ji chirped.
“It’s only you oppa.” Jongwoon mimicked in a little voice. “She’s in the bathroom.” Cold eyes swung to an approaching Kyuhyun.
“You okay?” Kibum nodded and showed him his patched up arms. “You scared me.” He rubbed his friend’s smooth cheeks.
“I’m fine Kyu.” Kibum clasped his hand and brought it down, their fingers laced together loosely. He then turned to Jongwoon and bowed deeply. “I am very sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Jongwoon replied in a bored tone.
Kyuhyun immediately dispensed with the formality and stood upright. The older boy was watching him with an odd shine to his dark eyes, a shadow of a smirk beginning to form on his lips.
“Come on Bummie, I want to show you something.” He grasped Kibum’s other hand and led him away. Kyuhyun released Kibum’s already slipping fingers and stared after them.
A pair of arms snaked around him from behind.
“See, my brother’s not that bad.”
He nodded wordlessly.
In the end, Kyuhyun spent all his time through the cookout eyes glued to Kibum and Jongwoon, seething silently at the older boy talking to his best friend and touching him at every chance he got. Dark calculating eyes caught his gaze, the same smirk spread slowly across his face as he casually hung his arm around Kibum’s neck. Kyuhyun suddenly felt an immense dislike towards the boy named Kim Jongwoon.
