17 years ago at 12:45 p.m., I became a mother.  I've had five little souls start their life inside me; three have grown, and two are grieved, but Kim was my first.  The first to stretch my skin and spread my bones, the first to teach me the pain and joy of labour, and the first to latch on and sleep between Jack and I for many, many nights.  I see a multitude of images in my mind, of her as a baby, as a gap-toothed third grader, and now a 17 year-old who will graduate from high school in six months.  It's hard to believe how fast (and sometimes, how painfully slow!) her childhood has passed.

This morning after she had opened her gifts and left for school, I decorated cupcakes (her 'cake' this year).   She is having friends over tonight and I have assembled large plates of fresh fruits and veggies, there will be pizza, and cold non-alcoholic drinks.

For her birthday this year, I made 'burger slider' cupcakes:

I only made two dozen, so there won't be any leftovers I'm sure!

Vanilla cupcakes split in half, a two-bite brownie (slightly flattened) for the 'burger', orange icing for cheese, and red & yellow icing for mustard and ketchup.  I put a tiny smear of vanilla icing on the bottom 'bun' to hold the brownie in place.  I teased Kim that the vanilla icing was the 'mayo', which she hates ;-)

These were my inspiration:

After I decorated the cupcakes, Jack and I took Charlotte to attend Julia's Christmas concert at school.  Charlotte sat quietly in Jack's lap for the first few performances and then, I heard The Burp.  Mothers, you all know what I'm talking about.  I grabbed her hand and quickly led her through the aisles and out of the gym and almost made it to the bathroom before she let go :-/  Julia was just headed to the gym for her performance when we came out of the bathroom so Jack stayed behind with the camera to watch Julia, and I took Charlotte home.  I changed her clothes, cleaned her up, and set her up on the couch with The Grinch and a sippy cup of water.  I feel bad that I didn't see Julia's performance, but I'm glad that Jack was able to stay.

Now, to care for a sick little girl, and tidy the house and make room for loud, boisterous teenagers :-)
