So, I'm due for a bit of an update.
Last week I did my online NRP written test and the following day I did the clinical part of the NRP recertification. When the instructor started setting up the equipment and resus dolls I felt a bit shaky and teary but eventually pushed aside thoughts of my experience with Abby and focused on the task at hand. We went through all of the possible components of NRP (PPV, chest compressions, medications, UVC, etc) and then worked in teams of 4 and 5 to go through a real-time scenario while we were videotaped and assessed. I passed the workshop and will be certified for NRP until this time next year.
After NRP, several of us walked to the Art Gallery of Ontario to see the
Frida and Diego exhibit. The art work was really interesting and the gallery itself was beautiful too.
The IMPP program assistant gave me a stack of paperwork related to my upcoming clerkship in Saskatoon. I have immunization forms to get filled out, I signed the contract, and am slowly getting things organized to begin my clerkship in a month. I contacted the manager in Saskatoon and asked for copies of policies and such that would be helpful for me to review before I begin and she sent me 16 email attachments. I'm glad to have the information and I'll be printing those this week, as well as updating my IMDCTC reference cards and drug cards to reflect Saskatchewan standards and policies instead of the ones here in ON.
I've ordered a few bits of midwifery equipment that I've been waiting to buy until there was an actual possibility of me working as a midwife, including a
doppler! The idea that I will be actually working in my own province with midwives I know (for my clerkship) is starting to feel more real now, which is equally terrifying and exciting.
Yesterday morning I headed to Niagara Falls with four of my classmates. It was a fun road trip, the Falls were beautiful, and it was nice to be doing tourist-y things instead of studying for a change. As I headed to Niagara Falls, Jack headed to the city with Julia and Charlotte to see the
live show of How to Train Your Dragon. It's Jack's favorite animated movie and he said it was amazing, they all really enjoyed it. Jack texted me that he was "missing 2 people" since Kim and I should have both been there with them. It was a strange feeling all day as I was standing beside the Falls missing them and feeling like they should be there with me, and also that I should be there with them at the show.
I booked my flight home (11 more days!) and will spend some time going through my stuff this week. I'm sure I'll have to ship a box of stuff home as it won't all fit in my suitcases. Once I'm home I'll have just over 2 weeks to get everything ready for me to be on call 24 hrs a day for 13 weeks, in the winter. It will be an adjustment for sure. I should have 4-6 days off per month and will be at home for those, and hopefully Jack and the girls will be able to come in and see me in between my own visits home. I'm sure we'll be making a lot of miles on that highway between now and March!
And now it's Sunday. I have lots of little (but time consuming) things to finish up for school, there's laundry to do, and I imagine I'll need to get out for a walk at some point too. I've been awake for two hours but haven't showered or eaten yet so it's time to do that, and then get back to work.
