It's really difficult to describe what this experience is like; the intensity, the workload, the emotional challenges of being away from home and in a (big!) strange city. It feels strangely normal to be here, and yet also feels wrong to be away from home. Quite the inner conflict.
I made a detour on the way to class this morning and dropped off my cheque to register for a student midwifery conference that will be happening next weeked. Should be very interesting!
Today in class: We were divided into groups of 3-4 to prepare informed choice discussion on various issues and then had to present them to the class. I found it really helpful and informative to review the topics last night to prepare for today and I'm eager to do the same preparation for the many ICDs we will need to have. We have to prepare for and be assessed (by assessor as well as peer assessment) on at least 8 ICDs on topics such as genetic testing, IUGR, postdates, etc. I'd better get at 'er.
What else today....we briefly finished going over care compenents of the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and the birth. Spent time doing peer assessments at the various simulation stations this afternoon (newborn exam, pap smear, heart and lung sounds, initial physical exam, IV's, metabolic screening, etc etc.
We each met with the director of the program to discuss our progress so far, our grades for the modules we completed over the summer, our choices for clerkship placements ( I asked for Barrie or London), and discussed whether or not we may be eligible for the 'accelerated stream'. For the students in the accelerated stream, they may be able to start their clerkships as ealry as mid-November. For those who aren't in the accelerated stream, they will have to complete another term of classes before doing their 13 week clerkship (making it a 9 month program, instead of just 6). We won't know for sure if we've been placed in the accelerated stream until the end of October, but so far it's looking like I'll qualify. I still have to be assessed on my class work and clinical skills for the next 5 weeks.
We were given a 'heads up' on a project we'll be assigned soon. We have to choose a topic that is important to us and would be useful to the entire group as midwives who will practice in Ontario, prepare a brief presentation and a properly written paper. I'm not sure what topic I'll choose yet - maybe rural birth.
Tomorrow we're reviewing documentation, doing several case studies where we have to complete the Antenatal 1 and 2 forms used here in Ontario, more simulation lab peer assessments, and more sociology discussions (4 more to go!). So, it's off to bed for me.
