SWITCHED
Chapter 1
“Why did this guy have to be so clingy?” thought Tatsumi Souichi as he burst out the door of his apartment. Not long after the sound of the slammed door was heard, a voice called out after him. “Senpai! Please wait!” called Morinaga Tesuhiro. “Like hell I will” muttered a bad tempered Senpai as he hurried down the stairs and out of the apartment complex. As expected, his hasty retreat was not enough to deter the eager kouhai that always followed him. Nevertheless, he needed to breathe! If at least for a few seconds.
“Senpai!” his kouhai sighed his name with the familiar smile Tatsumi had come to know as he finally caught up to him. Tatsumi tried not to dwell on that expression as he felt a small tint of red color his cheeks. They walked together to the station. All the while, Tatsumi Souichi was quiet, his expression somber and his thoughts mildly irritated. He never thought it could be possible but apparently he was wrong to have thought that way. His kouhai had proved the impossible possible, as he had gone from clingy to total pest in the past few weeks. “Was he being too lenient on the guy?” Tatsumi thought as they got on the train.
Ever since he had grudgingly admitted that he wanted Morinaga in his life, his kouhai had become increasingly arrogant as though he thought he had some claim to him. It just made his mood all the worse. He huffed. “Senpai, what’s wrong?” asked the unsuspecting kouhai. Tatsumi looked up into green eyes. He blinked, then frowned. “It’s you that’s wrong!” he hissed under his breath, mindful of the people around them. Morinaga was surprised to hear him say that. “Why? What did I do?” Morinaga asked with wide eyes. He could not possibly comprehend what could be wrong. In Morinaga’s eyes, the past few weeks had been pure bliss for him as he felt the walls that had been separating him from his Senpai come down. He could not be any more happy than he was now.
“You’re smothering me!” Senpai said, his anger quickly rising. “What? I don’t understand” Morinaga said, his good mood fading. “Don’t give me those puppy eyes!” hissed Tatsumi, his hands curling up into fists on reflex. “Of course you don’t understand!” he replied. “Well if you would only explain…” Morinaga tried asking. “Today!” Tatsumi quickly turned to face Morinaga. “I told you that you didn’t need to come! I insisted you stayed home, but no! You had to come!” Tatsumi was close to shouting.
Today was a Saturday, and the University, so close to the end of the year would be completely empty. Tatsumi was just worried about the current cultures he was working on and wanted to check up on them. However, somehow his annoying kouhai had invited himself along. Which at the moment, he really didn’t appreciate. “Senpai” Morinaga’s tone suddenly was completely serious. “It’s you that doesn’t understand” he suddenly declared his eyes and postured completely set. “Eeh!?” exclaimed an irritated Tatsumi. “I don’t understand!? You must be joking!” he responded incredulous.
At that point, the train entered a tunnel and only the lights inside belied the absolute darkness. “It’s because you’re not in my shoes that you don’t see what I see!” said a hurt Morinaga. “ Eeh! Your shoes? It is you that doesn’t see. If you were in my shoes, you wouldn’t last a day!” declared Souchi with an air of superiority. “Senpai, you…” Morinaga was about to say when the lights went out on the train leaving them in complete darkness. “ What the..” Souchi started when Morinaga reached out to him on reflex. He was about to protest when the whole train started to rock violently. He reached out for Morinaga in return and did not say anything when he felt his kouhai’s arms go around him. The train continued to shake, and the lights would not turn back on. Morinaga held on to his Senpai tightly, as he prayed in his head that everything would be alright. The train was still in motion as the lights flickered on and off. Tatsumi could not help but hold on to Morinaga with clutched fists full of handfuls of cloth. Finally, the tremors stopped and the lights turned back on.
They let go of each other, confused by the whole situation. No one else seemed as scared as they felt, and there was no time to ask as they arrived at their destination. Shaken, they got down from the train, completely disoriented. Surely there should be some sort of measure taken after such a big earthquake. “Senpai, are you ok?” Morinaga asked then stopped. “What…?” he shook his head. He was looking at himself. Himself was looking back with a face of complete shock. If he was over there, then where was he?… He looked at his hands, which were not his hands. He looked at his clothes, which were not his clothes. He touched his face and felt his long hair tied in a ponytail.
As realization of what had happened struck him, he decided to take action as he took hold of the frozen figure in front of him and found them a more private place to figure things out. He walked them both to the University, grateful it was close by and there was no one to stop them. Once there, he walked straight to the lab where he found a chair and sat down the frozen figure of the body he was in before. He reached out to touch the face of the man in front of him. “Senpai?” he asked. The man in front of him was completely frozen and could not answer him. He looked around the lab for something that could help him, leaving the current figure by himself.
