The sprint triathlon this morning went swimmingly well!
I got up around 4a, got out of the house at 4:40a and picked up Dylan. We headed north (about an hour) to the state park where the tri was being held. I got my stuff set up, got my timing chip and then just had to wait. By the time the first wave started, I didn't want to do it. I was getting a little freaked... But, Dylan got up at 4a on a Sunday to go with me. I had to do it. Plus I paid for it.
My wave started and I was the last one in the water, on purpose. I walked as far as I could then started swimming. I got about 1/2 way to the 1/3rd mark and thought, "I don't want to do this." Again, I was letting myself get a little ooog'd out. I persevered. When I got to the 1/3rd mark which was the first buoy, I was feeling pretty darn good. I mostly swam the free style but I also did a modified doggy paddle and a little bit of side stroke. There was a kayak there but I didn't need him.
The waves were bigger during the 2nd section. I had to do more side stroke and doggy paddle but I told myself I was doing well and to remain calm. When I was doing the free style I reminded myself to relax so that I bobbed with the waves. Before long I was at the 2nd buoy. I made the corner and was on my last 3rd section. It seemed that the last 3rd took longer than it should have; however.
I never panicked, I didn't have to rest on a kayak (although there's nothing wrong with that) and I didn't have to flip on my back to rest.
500 yards - open water. I kicked that lake's rear!
The bike was 17.6 miles. I saw several guys changing tires. Oooof. I haven't seen that much in my other triathlons. There were two cool things about the bike. Once I got up to 30 MPH going down a HUGE hill. Whoa. That's a bit freaky on a bike. Of course on the way back I had to GO UP that HUGE hill. I think I was going 1 mph toward the top. The other good thing is my pace seemed pretty good for most of it. I'm interested to see my time/splits to see what I averaged.
The run was a bit of a... There were several slight inclines. When you're already exhausted from a swim and bike, slight inclines are tough. They had plenty of water stops, a couple of water 'sprinklers' and at the turn around for the sprint run they had ice cold paper towels.
I like this racing outfit. They are better put together than the other racing group in the area.
In other news, I really really need this dog to quick farting. They stink like whoa. It's almost making me sick.
