I hope Prop. 8 is repealed and that Kenneth Starr is publicly humiliated

"A guarantee of equality that is subject to exceptions by the majority is no guarantee at all."

- Therese Stewart, San Francisco chief deputy city attorney, arguing that Prop. 8 violates equal-rights principles in the state Constitution

The lawyer defending Prop. 8 is Kenneth Starr. Kenneth Starr! The guy who orchestrated Clinton's impeachment! And listen to what he said:

"Proposition 8 does not erode any of the bundle of rights that this state has very generously provided" to same-sex couples.

- Kenneth Starr, lawyer for Protect Marriage, the sponsor of Prop. 8

The rights this state has "generously" provided? O yes, it's very "generous" how the state of California has tried to treat gay people as equal citizens. Gay people are just abusing that generosity by asking for all of these rights and crap. Wouldn't want to get too pushy and ask for full equality, would we?

Kenneth Starr makes me sick.

We should just eliminate civil marriage. If people want to get married privately, fine; but putting marriage under the purview of the government makes it too easy to restrict it for minority groups. Apparently, in the course of the hearing on Prop. 8, the question came up as to whether existing civil marriages should be renamed civil unions and the word "marriage" should be reserved for religious ceremonies. To my mind, that doesn't go far enough.
