Something Lonely About the South

So I've spent some of the evening watching Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus (I think I got that right), which is about life and art in the rural South. I didn't watch all of it, but I taped it so I can finish it later. It gave me quite a bit to think about, but the main thing I've taken away from it so far is how lonely the Southern life is. I've lived in those towns, I've visited those towns, I have family in those towns, and it leaves me sad at times.

My brother is fine, moved to a regular room, and will probably go home in the next couple of days. Pretty much what we expected, after the visit we made, but my parents laid the guilt on thick after that: aren't we coming back to visit again, don't we think we should? No, I've got to get ready for classes, and Amy has to work sometimes. Besides, we weren't having much luck getting Zoey back to visit, since the hospital doesn't like young'uns in those areas.

Today was the official celebration by searing of animal flesh, and the sirloins we bought did us proud. We also had some ginormous baking potatoes. Seriously, about twice the size of regular. I've never seen such, but they were wonderfully tasty. It was a good celebration, or just a good excuse to eat a steak once in a blue moon. Sorry to all you vegetarians out there for that.

I've been thinking about the myspace/lj connection, and about why I post the same thing most of the time in both places. I'm looking at it as a different audience in each place, so why not share the same thing to the different audiences? There's minor overlap, but not much.

Art class tomorrow. Amy might manage a doctor's appointment, I need allergy shots, Amy needs sleep (she's working tonight), we need a trip to the drug store, and I may even get to go to the campus and pick up the final paperwork needed for all those teaching certificates. Some of that will probably fall into Wednesday...I'm feeling behind in planning for classes, but I'm really just keeping up right now. I'm through the sculpture class, and into architecture. After that: lit, drama (I can cruise through those), music, dance, and so on...I think I'll throw in a Slam section in the performance art discussion, maybe even show a movie about it.

We should have a yard sale on Saturday, though we'll see if it happens. Amy's mom arrives that evening, and will be staying for a few days. Sunday, we'll have Zoey's birthday party. Yeah, I'll not have much time to work on class notes next weekend, I suspect, but it'll be good in some other ways. The weekend after that, I should drive up in a U-Haul and throw a lot of our stuff in storage. I need to find an apartment for us while I'm up there, and we're actually considering a few places, even as far north as Huber Heights. It'll probably just be for a year anyway, and I hope to find a townhouse with a basement or extra storage somewhere...I'll tow my car up in the process, drive it around to hunt for apartments, then park it at the in-laws' and take the Greyhound back. At least, that's the plan. Again, not many notes to be taken then. Running to stand still, I tell ya.

The weekend after that, there's a Floating Men show in town, probably the last one I'll be able to attend (unless I catch the one in Atlanta the night before) for some time. The weekend after that, I should trek down to Americus, GA, and visit Marty Evans and talk Slam history.

In the middle of all this, I'm busy packing up some stuff. We're moving in early July, and I don't feel much like we're getting ready for it, but we're both too busy with work and the girl-child. I'll be able to kick into high gear after the quarter's over, in late June, so it'll work out somehow.

I'm loving the art class. I'm just rushing to keep up with it, and it's only going to get worse in the next couple of weeks. Eh, I've been through worse.

Zoey took 20 steps tonight before she fell over. She's getting really good at this walking stuff, though she's obviously not quite there yet.

So how are y'all?

david, visiting family, birthday, movies, zoey
