“Byakuya Does Not Approve”

By: the butler

Contains: young Byakuya, ponytailed Ukitake, Kyouraku in his usual scruffy self, hints of Kyouraku/Ukitake, an infamous pink haori and one massive boy-crush. No spoilers, I think. Characters belong to Kubo Tite.

The autumn wind has begun to blow through Seiretei, and Byakuya, heir apparent to the Kuchiki clan, thoroughly enjoys it. For one thing, it wouldn’t be so hot when he’s out on the training grounds mastering his swordsmanship, his clothes and hair sticky and clinging and heavy. And anyway, he enjoys cold weathers better. A few more weeks before he’d be required to wear scarves and coats- Byakuya not so secretly longed for the heirloom scarf to finally adorn his neck.

His honorable grandmother bought him a beautiful coat, though, and he couldn’t wait to try it out. The Demon Cat would probably make fun of him and ruin it, but it’s not for Yoruichi’s sake that Byakuya would wear his best coat, gods forbid. Byakuya rarely feels the need to please other people, much less curry their favor. Being the Kuchiki heir means you only ever need to please the Kuchiki head, which was his grandfather, and the Kuchiki head’s wife, which was his grandmother, who dotes on him.

His sensei, though, his sensei’s a different story.

There’s something about the guy that makes everyone, yes, everyone, want to be liked by him. And it’s not as if the guy is hard to please- on the contrary, he always seems to have a kind word for anything. It’s probably his delicate features, or his graceful manner, or his kind words, or his indulgent smile, his soothing voice- any one and all of the above. And of course, the fact that the man is one of the two strongest captains personally trained by the captain general. There’s something about Ukitake Jyuushirou that makes Byakuya want to be patted on the head.

And today, Byakuya will be meeting his Jyuushirou-sensei. It’s a pity that he can’t wear his new coat yet since it would be too warm, but it’s okay, there will be another time. The excitement of meeting up with his sensei makes Byakuya hurry through the grounds of the Kuchiki estate, something a Kuchiki heir should probably never do.

----------------

Giving his retainers hardly enough time to prepare, Byakuya jumps out of the carriage and hurriedly walks through the 13th squad grounds, making a beeline towards the captain’s quarters. Byakuya’s face breaks out into a smile when he espy his Jyuushirou-sensei, and then instantly turns into a frown when his line of sight included the guy sitting beside his Jyuushirou-sensei.

Darn Kyouraku Shunsui’s visiting again.

Byakuya slows down, hoping that by the time he gets there Shunsui would be leaving. No such luck though, before he could hide behind a handy tree to wait out the unwanted man’s visit, his sensei catches sight of him and beckons him with a wave. Sighing, Byakuya trudges towards the two men. In his tantrum, he fails to notice Shunsui staring at him with a curious look on his scruffy face, lips twitching into a bemused smile.

The Kuchiki heir barely greets the 8th division captain with civility, which in turn laughs heartily and greets him with what he thinks is too much familiarity- calling him by his first name! Gritting his teeth, he turns away and focuses all his attention to his Jyuushirou-sensei. Shunsui makes it hard for Byakuya to ignore him though, since every other sentence by his sensei is interrupted by the man with his nonsensical chatter. Thankfully, the scruffy man soon stood up to take his leave.

“I’ll be leaving the two of you then, I hear a bottle of sake calling my name.”

Byakuya wrinkles his nose in disgust, alcohol at such an hour. Really.

“Ah, you drink too much Shunsui.”

Of course, his sensei knows best.

“And you don’t drink enough, Jyuu-chan.”

Jyuu-chan? -CHAN? The nerve of this guy, just because they’ve known each other since their Shinigami Academy days!

“Aah, before I forget, will you be staying indoors today for young Byakuya’s lessons?”

Such impertinence!

“No, I was planning to take him for a walk and look for a good place to meditate on his sword’s name.”

“I see.”

And with that, Shunsui shrugs off his infamous pink haori and proffers it towards his friend.

“Huh?”

“You better wear something warmer. You can give it back to me tomorrow. I wouldn’t want Jyuu-chan to freeze while meditating with young Byakuya here.”

“But this…”

“Ara, don’t tell me you’ll refuse? Ah, Jyuu-chan, you’re breaking my heart!”

“Shunsui…” Byakuya, stewing in his anger, failed to register his sensei’s warning look towards the bemused 8th division captain.

“Okay, okay, just promise me you’ll wear it, please? The wind’s picking up and your cough’s getting worse.”

Sighing, but with a smile on his face, Ukitake takes the proffered haori. “All right. But just because you asked so nicely.”

Still stewing in his anger, Byakuya again fails to notice the smiles and the silent exchange between his Jyuushirou-sensei and Kyouraku taichou. He only snapped out of his self-enveloping ire when Shunsui patted him on the head before turning and heading out on his way. Ukitake-sensei had to call his name twice before Byakuya remembers to close his mouth and turn his attention to his sensei, who now has the infamous pink haori on his shoulders. Ukitake had to stop himself from chuckling at his student’s apparent abhorrence of the haori. The boy is far too transparent with his feelings. Perhaps one day he could be taught to master his emotions, but for now Ukitake enjoys the innocence and passion behind each of Byakuya’s facial expression.

“Come on then, Byakuya, let’s take a walk.”

It’s too much, just too much. First Shunsui crash his lessons with his Jyuushirou-sensei, and patronizes him as ‘young Byakuya this, young Byakuya that’, and then the man forces his Jyuushirou-sensei to wear such an abomination! It’s too much, just too much. Too much that Byakuya could not concentrate on meditating about his zanpakutou. Calling it a day, Ukitake-sensei gently rebukes his perturbed student’s lack of concentration on the way back to the captain’s quarters. Instead of the pat on the head that he had been hoping for, Byakuya gets a rebuke from his Jyuushirou-sensei! And the pat on the head for the day had to come from that Kyouraku!

“It’s because of that haori!” Byakuya blurts out, hardly keeping it together and obviously throwing a tantrum.

“Haori? Shunsui’s haori?”

“Yes!”

Ukitake gives his student a warm smile, causing Byakuya to blush and look away. Although he hardly needs to ask since he already knows (although Shunsui had to point it out to him before he saw it for himself), Ukitake asks, “And what about the haori that throws off your concentration?”

“I… I…”

“Yes?” Ukitake smiles again to encourage Byakuya to say whatever it was he needed to get off his chest. He probably shouldn’t have, since seeing another warm smile from his Jyuushirou-sensei, Byakuya’s resolve falters, and the words just don’t seem to come to him. Quickening his pace, he settles instead to muttering,

“I… I just don’t approve!”

------------

end.
