Ants!

Mar 06, 2004 10:50

Once again, we have an infestation of sugar ants. Chris went into the kitchen to feed the dog and found them wandering in a line straight to the box of sugared cereal. This is the second box they've gotten into this week. We're going to have to keep it in the refrigerator from now on. Fortunately, they show no interest in the piles of dirty dishes, or in any non-sweetened food items. They are on a mission for sugar alone. We sprayed again, but that never stops them for very long. Bait traps have no effect on this type of ants (also known as "crazy ants" for their crazed and aimless patterns of traveling). We may have to call in an exterminator. Bugs are so oogy. Even ants kind of make me shivery.

In the interests of reducing the chances of future ant invasions, I am hoping to have a clean apartment by the end of the day today. I have just finished doing an appalling amount of dishes (no dishwasher - it's all by hand). Need to finish cleaning the kitchen surfaces & floors, clean the bathroom, pick up around the bedroom, pick up & dust the living room, and vacuum everywhere. Laundry needs to be done, but that is husband's job. He is doing his weekend rounds of the area guitar stores, seeing what's come in. I cut him some slack on that, but he's aware that when he gets back, we need to tackle the dining room table together before finishing up whatever remains on my list. We've not used the table for a while due to the mountains of crap on it - mostly assorted guitar parts and wires. My house is a living example of chaos theory.

God is punishing me for my youthful laziness about housework. I married someone even more cavalier than I about cleaning house. Mostly this is due to the fact that his mother did all the housework when he was growing up, period. It was her full-time job, so he never had to do any of it. The cleaning-up-after-himself instinct never developed, although I have an idea it was pretty weak to begin with. Mine is, and I had a mother who made me help her with housework all the time. It just never seemed to register with me. Some of us are impaired that way.

So, let's see how much we can get done today. Radio is on to help the day move along faster. It's nasty, gray and blah outside, but not cold, so I can at least keep the windows open and air everything out (what a treat after this endlessly freezing winter!). Husband has promised to help. I may move a little slower due to the depressing weather, but I got an early start on things today, after ten hours of sleep. There are caffeinated beverages at hand to revive my flagging spirits, and I'm planning curried tuna salad for lunch. I can do this.
