Word usage
My math professor is kind of a word nerd as well as a math nerd, and he told us last night that the supermarket down the road recently had the following sign up in the produce department: "Please do not shock the corn." Hee. Some non-native English speakers there, perhaps? Or just bad spellers? What was scary was that most of the youngsters in the class didn't seem to get what was wrong with the sign until the professor explained it. Perhaps "shucking corn" is an old-fashioned expression?
The prof pointed out that this supermarket is the same one that proclaims it is "OPEN 24 HOURS," and then right underneath it lists its hours of operation: 6 a.m.-midnight Mon.-Sat., 8 a.m.-11:00 p.m. on Sundays. True story, I have seen the sign myself. Someone needs to go have a talk with the management there about the meaning of "OPEN 24 HOURS," and explain that it generally implies that the store is open 24 hours in a row. Some comic used to do a joke about this, but I can't remember who.
