Really? /Really?/

Normally, I don't post full transcripts of the things I receive privately (because that's petty), but this is just way too ridiculous for words.

I got an e-mail this morning from someone who's apparently stumbled across one of my posts on SPPf. One of the lengthy ones to Silver. They also apparently failed to read said post because they ask a question I've already answered in length. Anyone who bothers to read anything I write on SPPf would know that: 1) I write lengthy posts and 2) I don't like it when people tl;dr what I have to say. (Breezy knows this aaaaaalllll too well.)

But of course, not everyone's maturity and reading comprehension skills are up-to-par in this fandom. And also, yes, fandom is serious business, and triggers mean "I don't like it." So anyway, this ensued:

Sender:
You say you have to do everything like the canon because it's FANfiction. But what if you are a fan, but just think Flare Blitz would be right for Flareon or something?

Me:
Everyone who writes fanfiction and asks for advice on fandom-related fanfiction on a fandom-based board is a fan. Unless they're trolling.

That aside, "just because you think Flare Blitz would be right for Flareon" isn't a good reason for giving a Pokémon a move it can't learn. As I've said within that same thread, you should only do it as a last resort. Before reaching that point, you should try to come up with ways of working with a Pokémon's natural, canon abilities in order to solve the problems you throw at your characters. Otherwise, you encounter two issues:

1. People who are aware of what a Flareon can do will notice and call you out on it.
2. You'll come off as uncreative because what you're doing is the equivalent of giving a Mary Sue a god-like deus ex machina power just to solve a plot point that you can't solve with a person's natural abilities. There's basically very few problems a Flareon might encounter that it can't solve with the moves it already knows, so why use a random move it can't know in an overly simple manner instead of one it can in a creative way?

Beyond that, I've pretty much covered the other reasons why it's a bad idea to give Pokémon moves they can't learn in this post, which I recommend in general because it thoroughly explains my thoughts on the matter better than what I can do here: [link] Note the part where I say, "If there was a particular reason that Flareon could use Flare Blitz -- as in it wasn't just 'because it's fanfiction so I can do whatever I want'... which is a terrible reason to [use to] explain anything you do in a fic -- then it'd be easier for a reader to buy it.["] "Just because Flare Blitz would be right for Flareon" falls under the "because it's fanfiction so I can do whatever I want" area. If you're going to have a reason for doing something in a fanfiction, that reason needs to be plot-related. Never do anything just because you want to.

Sender:
WELL YOU DONT HAVE TO GIVE ME THIS LONG ESSAY YOU SHOULD HAVE JUST SAID "THERE IS NO REASON" I HATE ESSAYS ITS A TRIGGER FOR ME.

[Note: Because, yes, this person has been through severe psychological trauma in the past that she now associates with lengthy posts, so whenever she comes across one, she breaks down into overwhelming depression or emotion to the point where she literally cannot function for a period of time immediately afterwards. All over a lengthy response.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I'm getting trolled, but on the other hand, this sounds suspiciously like one of those badfic authors who gets butthurt whenever someone says something they don't want to hear. The sender's response to my next reply seals the deal.]

Me:
Sooo... you got triggered by the multiple considerably lengthier posts I made on Serebii, which is what I assume prompted you to e-mail me about a dead thread in which I already answer your question? That certainly explains a lot.

Sender:
Essays as replies are the only ones I hate. There is no reason for this to continue, so don't reply.

[Translation: Omg, I can't win this argument. TIME TO WHIP OUT THE MOST IMMATURE, OVERUSED ESCAPE LINE EVER~!]

Seriously, why the hell am I in fandom? I swear, sometimes, I'm tempted to go to a tiny island of the web and keep my fics there because every year, fandom (or at least the ones I'm in) get stupider and stupider. I swear, it wasn't this ridiculous before Gen V came out.

But seriously, ffs, I hope that triggers don't end up being treated the same way autism is treated in this fandom. It's hard enough to get taken seriously if you actually do suffer from those kinds of things, but this fandom has a talent of taking those kinds of concepts and using them as excuses for crappy behavior. (Okay, that doesn't just happen in this fandom, but it's the only fandom I remotely care about that does that. And yes, I know that there are probably a number of people out there that have AS or triggers. I'm just talking about the kids who claim to have them just to have an excuse to bully and flame people into treating them kindly after they pull classy acts.) Twelve-year-olds, kindly GTFO so the rest of us can actually be treated with sensitivity and the dignity we deserve. You can, meanwhile, grow a spine and suck it up when someone gives you crit or responds to you intelligently.

ETA: The train wreck keeps going!

Sender:
Someone kept yelling long things back at me when I tried to talk. It broke my ears. So, yes, I am triggered.

[And this has to do with being unable to read massive passages of text that were in no way trying to insult your intelligence... how? Also note that this person would have had to read a longer post than my responses anyway in order to contact me.]
