The creature bit into his neck; pain erupted from wound and blood started running down his neck. John tried to fight; he kicked, shoved and struggled and only caused the creature’s hold to tighten and its teeth to sink in further. Spots started to dance at the edges of his vision and his knees trembled. Just as he was losing consciousness the creature exploded into a cloud of dust. As John’s legs collapsed he noticed a young black kid standing in front of him with a wooden stake in his hand.
“Don’t worry, you’re good,” he heard the guy tell him as he finally passed out.

He awoke to the smell of food cooking and the chatter of people. His whole body ached and his head was pounding. He couldn’t hold back his groan of pain as he rolled over. He cracked open an eye and quickly closed it as the sunlight blinded him.
A cloth rustled close to him and then the sunlight was blocked from his head.\ “Sorry man. We just had to make sure,” a guy told him.
John forced his eyes open again and made eye contact with the guy that had saved his life last night.
“Thanks,” John got out, his voice gravelly. “For everything,’ he added with a nod.
“No problem. What were you doing out there all alone anyway?”
“What was that thing?” John asked instead.
“Vampire,” the kid answered immediately. “You almost became another victim.”
“And you drove a stake into its heart?”
“Yeah, don’t sound so skeptical John or David or Leonard - whatever your name is. We found your truck, brought it back for you.”
“And you went through it. What’d you take?” John started to get angry as he forced himself into a sitting position. The room swam slightly, but he dealt with it.
“You’ve got quite the collection of IDs. I had to know what I’d brought home,” the kid explained, holding eye contact with John. John exhaled and nodded. He could accept that. “So, again what were you doing out there last night?”
“Hunting. I’d heard there were a string of bizarre unsolved murders in the area. Figured I’d check it out.”
“Use your head next time. Stake to the heart, holy water, fire and sunshine. That’s how you handle the things responsible for your unsolved murders.”
“I didn’t even know vampires existed.”
The kid chuckled, low and humorlessly. “They do. Everything exists,” he added. “I’m Gunn,” the kid introduced himself and extended his hand.
“John,” he answered and shook his hand.
“Well come on John. Breakfast should just about ready. We’ll get a good meal in you, educate you on the finer points of darkness and evil and get you on your way. Being out after dark around here just isn’t safe.”
