Charles’ wheelchair is quiet as he rolls out onto the back deck. Despite the quiet entrance, he knows she heard his approach.
The cold fall evening breeze doesn’t appear to bother her as it tosses around her blonde tresses and ruffles her coat. She doesn’t acknowledge his presence, just continues to stare aimlessly out into the night. Finally she turns to face him and Charles is glad, for once, that he’s already sitting down. His knees go weak and fear clenches his heart. He knows his heart starts racing and hates it because he knows she can tell. Darla’s pregnant. It looks like she’s due any day. Charles doesn’t know much about vampires but he didn’t think they could get pregnant. The thought, combined with Darla’s state, terrifies him.
“Hello Charles,” her voice light and deceptively even. She offers him a warm, genuine smile. She’s acting like they were once friends, reunited after a time apart. She shouldn’t even have come here.
The last time they’d seen one another Darla tossed him, wheelchair and all, through a glass window and into the front yard. He’d suffered a broken arm and a plethora of cuts and bruises. But it was all worth it when he doused her in holy water, ruining her face, neck and hands. It appears holy water didn’t do any permanent damage. Darla was as beautiful as he remembers her to be. The man Darla had chosen to be her next victim doesn’t even know that Charles had saved his life and kept him from an eternity of damnation. And he won’t ever know because then Charles would have to admit to Erik that he had been keeping close tabs and saved his life. The world would have been a different, darker, place if she had succeeded.
“Darla,” Charles greets her with a frown. “And to what do I owe this visit?”
Her hand protectively moves to cradle her stomach; it’s a move he imagines is unintentional but clearly maternal. She lets out a humorless, forced laugh. “I need your help.”
He knows saying the words out loud must have cost her dearly because they obviously shock him. He can feel the anger and frustration coming off her in waves, but under it all he’s hit by the mind-numbing fear.
“And what makes you think I’d be willing to help you?”
“Because you are a good person, Charles,” she whispers as she rubs her hand over her belly. “I’ve run out of options. I’ve been to every shaman and voodoo witch doctor I could find. None of them were able to help me. You’re my last resort before heading home to see Daddy. Perhaps a mutant can do what the rest of the world could not…” she trails off, the exhaustion from her travels evident in her voice.
Charles takes a moment to consider things. He lets his mental shields down, trying to get a better feel for her. The last time she’d been around he hadn’t been able to read her thoughts or poke around in her head. Vampires were unreadable, save for when they gave off extreme emotions. But this time he was able to pick her up. It took him a few moments to realize that he had picked up her son - her human son - instead. He quickly rebuilt his shields, not wanting to pry into the mind of an unborn child.
“Understand I’m only doing this for your son,” Charles explains.
“So he is human?” Darla questions; a small, pleased smile appears on her face at his nod. “My dear, sweet boy,” she murmurs as she continues to rub her pregnant belly.
