Culture Shock (or, Ramblings of a White Christian-Born American Norm)

I learned the other day that this music artist I like is a member of the furry community. I was all ready to pay money for his work, and then I started looking more into the artist, and my first reaction was just, "Oh. Maybe not." It squicked me, even though it didn't mean anything sexual. All of his albums have different animals on them, but I had ( Read more... )

I expect rambly responses; it was kind of a rambly post. :) And I miss you too. Please feel free to call or comment on Facebook anytime you want; I've been more than a little remiss in keeping in touch with people, but I've been trying to fix that lately. I'm also coming out to Oregon at the end of the summer, so I hope we'll be able to meet up at some point.

I like what you have to say about the justice system being (somewhat) structured to judge people on a case-by-case basis -- I do think that's more right than the idea of universal laws, and I think it's also eminently practical in that it allows justice to adapt to changes in social and technological understanding much faster than legislation. One of the things I've been thinking about is how fast our understanding of the world keeps changing -- we keep coming up with new solutions to problems that spawn new problems of their own, and we have to adapt -- and that no one ever has "all the answers" because the answers aren't static; we have to keep figuring them out as we go along and live our lives. We can't ever stop thinking and say, "Now I've got people/the world/my life figured out."

Your "toying with whether or not brainwashing is okay if the individual actively chooses to be a part of it" also makes me think about my thoughts on "voluntary innocence" -- whether it's okay to say, "I know the world is cruel and evil, and life is short, but I choose to ignore those things and focus on my life and what makes me happy." Now obviously, I wouldn't prize ignorance or naivete as virtues in and of themselves, but when actively chosen from a framework of greater knowledge, I don't know.

Anyway, I really enjoy talking with you and hearing your thoughts as well. Please keep writing and thinking, and I hope we can continue to figure life out together. <3
