April 13th, 2001

The raging pulse on her left temple was killing her right now. Jessica lifted her arm, and gently poked at the forming bruise on the side of her head. Giving a heavy sigh, she continued to make her way to her neighborhood. Life has not liked her for the past five months. Recently, the family has run into debt, and when that came in December, it was like Hell sprung into their household and let open its gates. If Jessica were 20 years older, she'd deal with this predicament calmly, but no. Instead, her parents had constantly been fighting. She was scared that if things wouldn't clear up soon, she would find herself in an office, watching her parents file a divorcement. The worse part, her parents were 'trying' to keep them in the dark, and only Kyrstal was clueless of the crisis.

Jessica let out another unsatisfied sigh. Other than home, school was not all perfect and dandy. Ever since the debt struck the Jung household, she had become too depressed to focus on her education, let alone her image. At school, she was known as the "Ice princess" for her tough attitude. However, she could not keep up this image, and kids older than her were taking advantage of the situation. Jessica silently swore as the bruise began hurting again. Stupid 8th graders...Stupid counselor, you said they would stop bullying me...Some help you are...

Her body made a right turn as she entered her neighborhood. She was so close to sanctuary, and yet so close to Hell. Not paying attention to the street, Jessica stepped onto the hard asphalt and crossed the street; or at least tried to. After two steps, she was blown back right on her rear end. The speeding car made a sharp curve up ahead; she could hear tires screeching. Gaining her senses back after several seconds, Jessica got onto her feet, but then stopped when she heard a siren; the sound coming from the direction from which the vehicle went to. Worried, she glanced into which direction the car went. Her anxiety became fear when she realized it had gone towards the direction of her house. Jessica quickly grabbed her backpack that had fallen onto the ground and dashed towards the blaring sound.

The house she lived in was located in the corner of her neighborhood, and the closer she got towards home, the louder the sirens were. One more turn! Jessica picked up her pace, and skidded as she rounded the curb. Her jaw gaped open as the scene before her unfolded in her eyes. Apparently the sirens had belonged to an ambulance, and it was parked right in front of her house. Other than that, police cars surrounded the road. Police tape blocked entrance to the front yard; the only people past that line were policemen, and they were everywhere. Her eyes came across medics who were pulling out three stretchers from the house; all of them contained bodies. Once she had seen a small, bloody hand stick out from the hidden stretcher, her senses came to reality.

"OH MY GOD! NO!!!!!!!!" Tears flew off Jessica's face as she broke into a run and tried to reach the bodies that were being loaded into the ambulance. Several policemen heard her cry, and knew she was going to trespass. One cop swiftly grasped her arm and pulled her away from the police tape. "Hey! You can't be here! Get out of here!" The girl squirmed under his grip and gave him a death glare. "This is my damn house!!! You're taking away my family!!! LET ME GO!" Jessica spat as she continued to fight the locked grip. The more she fought, the more frustrated she became, and the more tears fell down. The cop flinched at the venom in her voice, and looked at the other men. The other cops were looking at her with eyes of pity. They knew that this girl had just become an orphan; at least a little sympathy would help.

The sirens soon sounded as the doors to the back of the ambulance closed, and the engine revved. Jessica snapped her head towards the moving vehicle, and fought even more. "I SAID LET ME GO! MY FAMILY!! I NEED MY FAMILY!!!" She began screeching; the pain wrenching at her heart was too much. The cop sighed and pulled the girl into one of the police cars. Quickly getting into the driver's seat, he turned the car on, "I'll drive you there, just...try to relax..." Relax? How can I relax when my family was just killed? Jessica did not bother in trying to stop the tears from falling, as the car pulled away from the side, and sped towards the fading ambulance.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Jessica sat on a bench in the hospital, curled into a ball. Her eyes were puffy, and she did not move. Of all the places in this wretched building, the last place she wanted to be at was a morgue. The doctor had walked through the room's doors two hours ago, and confirmed that all three died of murder. How they died; rope was used to suffocate them until they all fell unconscious, then all were stabbed several times in the back. What a cruel way to leave this world. No; none of them deserved to leave this world, or leave her. She bit her lower lip, drawing blood from biting too hard. How should she feel now? Shocked, because her family was killed for no reason? Devastated, because now her family was gone and had left her? Or angry, because cold-blooded monsters murdered a peaceful family, leaving a 12-year old to go no where.

She dug her face into her knees. Jessica felt so angry, she wanted to kill someone herself. However, not just anyone. More like the bastards that had taken away her life. Yet, the overwhelming sadness in her suppressed those malicious feelings, for now. What should she do? She had nowhere to go, nowhere to live, and nowhere to feel safe. The thoughts were too much for her to handle all at once, and in result, Jessica broke out crying again. Nurses from afar all glanced at the girl, feeling pity for her. What would this cruel world hold for her as an orphan?

A clock nearby ticked, the hour hand pointed to 8 while the minute hand pointed to 12. 8:00pm Jessica did not bother checking the time. It didn't matter anymore; nothing mattered anymore, except for the vengeance of her family. Shaking her head to push back a stray bang, something caught her eye. Well, not a something, but a someone. A girl, probably not much younger than she was, was staring at her with an expressionless face. The way she was glaring at her pissed her off for some reason. The girl realized that Jessica had taken notice of her presence, and walked towards her until she stood in front of the seated girl.

"What do you want?" Jessica tried to say it as coldly as possible. Talking to others was the last thing she needed.

"..."

"Listen, I'm in a crappy mood right now. If you don't have anything to say, then-"

"What are you feeling right now?" Jessica blinked at the girl's question.

"I'd guess you're angry. I mean, your family was murdered. I guess anyone would be mad about that."

".... Shut up...." How can this girl talk like this? Is she asking to be beaten?

"Well, this is reality." The girl straightened, and gave an evil smirk, "Your family is gone. The people that killed them took everything away from you. You have nothing-"

"I SAID SHUT UP, GOD DAMN IT!!!" Jessica abruptly stood up from the bench and swung her right hand, which was clenched into a fist, at the girl. Her hand stopped an inch away from the girl's face as the girl blocked her punch. Growling, Jessica shifted her weight onto her right leg, and shot her left leg towards the girl's rib cage. However, she was faster. The girl released her grip from Jessica's hand and swiftly tilted her body, so that the flying leg flew right above her. Finding an opening when the momentum in the kick forced Jessica to turn her body, the latter moved behind Jessica with incredible speed and kicked her in the back. Jessica stumbled forwards and smashed into the wall in front of her. The oxygen in her body exited as the blow surprised her senses.

After what seemed like ages to regain some strength, Jessica turned around and leaned against the wall. The girl in front of her was smiling. She wanted to rip that grin off her face.

"Do you want to be strong? Do you want power?" The girl stated clearly.

"..."

"Come with me, Jessica. I'll help you obtain power, power that will help avenge your family. Just come with me, and you'll get want you want."

Jessica's mind swirled at the offer. Powers that will help her avenge her family. Another way to phrase that was that she would be able to kill the murderers that took everything away from her. The malicious thoughts she had been trying so hard to suppress were coming again. Besides, what does she have to lose? She had already lost everything; it was better to have something than nothing at all. Jessica wanted to accept the deal, but she needed to know one thing, "I...I'll go, but.... who are you?" The girl gazed at her for a while before dropping her hand. She lifted the hem of her shirt to reveal a mark right above the waistband of her pants, a symbol. "Yuri of the Sphinx clan, and we want you to be the clan's next Black Cat."
