(I was wondering if I could use this prompt to close out the series, but actually it's come out too sad. There is something else I'd like to do, but whether I'll get the prompt for it...)

But it does close things out well, and you could have one more after this to lock the door, so to speak. Not all tales have to end on a happy note.

There must be loads of possibilities, surely, with all the wars and sackings and general carnage of the First and Second Ages??

Oh, there are. Too many, in fact. The question came down to whether to work with a named character, or an unnamed one. I have it fairly well written now and will revise and post tonight. Unnamed won.
