B2MEM 2011 Day Twenty-one, West and East: Across So Wide a Sea

Mar 22, 2011 13:35

Today's Challenge:  The words West and East are often used in the works of Tolkien. Write a story or poem or create an artwork that uses these words as the central focus, whether as cardinals, regions, or as metaphors.

Hanky Alert, I fear...

I did say! ;-)

(I was wondering if I could use this prompt to close out the series, but actually it's come out too sad. There is something else I'd like to do, but whether I'll get the prompt for it...)

But it does close things out well, and you could have one more after this to lock the door, so to speak. Not all tales have to end on a happy note.

There must be loads of possibilities, surely, with all the wars and sackings and general carnage of the First and Second Ages??

Again I liked this. I can't recall exactly what canon says about Dwarves -- would Aulë house their spirits? (Tis strange, btw, I've literally this minute decided to use west as a metaphor for madness in my story.)

There's a quote in the Appendices about how Dwarves believe there's a special bit of Mandos reserved for them, but that no-one else knows if that's true or not ;-)

Of course Gimli could have been the very first dwarf to actually ask Aulë in advance....

It is a lovely weepy piece - I'd say you can only really decide whether it becomes the end one when you've had all of the last 9 prompts.

You really want me to write that meeting, don't you? I can't promise! There are a number of moments I really wanted to write and haven't been able to yet, and March is running out of days!

Thank you, Linda! I do appreciate that you're reading all these since I know Legolas isn't usually your cup of tea. And I know I haven't commented on all of your B2MEM fics yet either - I do hope to catch up in April!

The whole series is turning out rather more emotional than I would have anticipated when I started, I have to confess! Though there have been a few lighter moments too.

Very poignant and well written. I have little time to write or read at the moment, but I spotted this. Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you! Back to Middle-earth Month's spawned so much fic all over the place that even those of us taking part are waaaay behind on other people's, so I wouldn't expect anyone else to necessarily be reading it all! When it's all finished I'll try and link all the drabbles into a single piece in the right order, so people who want to can catch up then.
