See, that's the core of it. Harry and Hermione truly love each other, as measured by the ultimate metric of such - they are willing to forego their own happiness if that's what's necessary to make the other happy.
I accept that. But it's as you say - they don't know that the other is similarly being self-sacrificing.
What we need is a sequel to this story, some way for Harry to discover that Ron *isn't* Hermione's first choice, and likewise for Hermione to discern that Harry's monster died when the Harrycrux did ('cause my own personal book 6 theory is that the 'chest monster' that had a life of its own inside Harry was - of course! - the fragment of Voldemort's soul that, indeed, had an independent existence within Harry's scar).
If only the Mirror didn't keep each subject's vision so *private*! Forget Won Won ... what I'd like would be for *Harry* to see this vision of Hermione's that you have here!
Hermione needs to 'capture' this Mirror of Erised fantasy in a pensieve memory ... and then Harry needs to come across it somehow ... we need a meddling third-party, where is Luna Lovegood when we need her?!!

Sometimes I just want to shake them until they see reason!
You know, when I read "sequel" I stopped reading the comment for a bit and my mind went off to all the possibilities of fixing this saving-people-thing they both have, and thought "maybe Harry can see the memory of her erised, but how? a pensive?" then I finish reading your comment...

Hun, we think alike!! AND YES!!! Where the bloody hell is Luna when you need her!?!?! (Because Luna knows! She knows all!! She is a H/HR shipper, mark my words!!)
Another thing. The chest monster, really. What was JKR thinking when she came up with that? Seriously, I mean, other then romance-wise, the books are perfect! It's just... the relatioonship, they make no sense.
(I believe that if H/HR relationship would've been the same in the epilogue as it was in the rest of the books I wouldn't be so... against the ending as I am. But no, JKR took the beautifull relationship these two had away from us.)
