Jul 14, 2009 16:43

My very first Yamato/Mimi fic, and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to write it down, really. This thing of writting about unusual parings (for me, in this case) it's pretty fun. And it's helpipng me with my wrtiter's block.

Well, it's kind of sad, and fluffy, and I'm very happy and proud of it. I hope you guys like it too!

Oh, yeah, my fourth entry for 5trueloves challenge.

“So… How did you exactly end up singing with us?”

Mimi looked at her companion and sighed. Really, she had told him how like, what, ten times already? She should make him stop drinking that junk, he was getting out of control, and surely, he’ll soon be out cold.

“I told you already. Dumb luck,” she replied anyway, sipping at her drink. “And I think we should go back to the hotel.”

Yes, that was the best decision. Because, what was she supposed to tell Sora when she asked about her boyfriend? Hey, Sora, Yamato drank his head off most of the nights during the tour while random girls threw themselves at him. But don’t worry, he kept saying over and over that he loves you. Of course, that would go so well. And, honestly, she couldn’t fathom what had made her friend shield himself behind alcohol. As far a she knew, he hated it.

“You’re right, we should,” Yamato slurred his answer and stood up, throwing some money on the table.

Mimi did the same, and followed the blonde-haired man outside the bar. Once she stood on the sideway, she saw that the streets of New York city were still bursting with life, so it probably wasn’t too late yet.

“Hey, let’s go take a walk at Central Park, so you can clear your drunken mind,” she said, grabbing his arm.

Yamato nodded and let her drag him along. They walked into the park a few minutes later, and after Mimi realized she wouldn’t be able to support Yamato’s weight for long, she found a bench and sat him there.

“God, you sure are heavy,” she murmured, collapsing next to the boy.

“So, how’s life treating you?”

The sudden question startled her, but she smiled nonetheless, admiring the nightly view of the city. “Good, I guess.”

And although she knew better than to expect anything else, Mimi couldn’t help but prepare for something more, something that never came. She laughed internally. Of course, she should’ve expected it; this was Yamato after all, the boy that never pried into anyone’s business. If it had been Michael or Taichi…

Averting her eyes to the side, she found him staring to the sky, probably trying to catch a glimpse of stars that couldn’t be seen in this big city; stars that, if you knew where to go, could be seen perfectly well back in Tokyo. She marveled at the sight of him; his perfect features, the blue of his eyes and the golden shine of his hair when the light hit it just right. The boy -no, man- was beautiful; there was no other word to describe him. And what was preventing her from flirting with him, from luring him into her bed?

The simple fact that he’s my best friend’s boyfriend, she thought, somewhat dejected. She would have to content herself with only watching from afar.

“And how are you, Yamato? How’s the band? And your relationship with Sora? Life in general?”

Yamato turned his blue gaze at her and she almost flinched at the thought that he had maybe heard the sadness in her voice when she mentioned Sora. And what had possessed her to ask him about that anyway?

It’s just curiosity…

“I’m fine. The band’s doing great. And life’s good,” he replied, not going into details.

“Oh, that’s good…”

Well, that was a little disappointing, she really wanted to know about his love life, but she wasn’t about to press the matter. It would totally give her away, and she didn’t want him to know about her crush on him. Not until she got over it, anyway.

“You want to know about our love life, don’t you?”

His voice startled her again, and she didn’t know what to say. Really, it sounded more like a stated fact than a question. What should she responded to that?

“N-no…”

Oh great, smooth Mimi, very smooth.

“You aren’t a good liar, Mimi. And shouldn’t you know already? I thought Sora told you everything when you talk over the phone.”

Mimi looked at the ground, playing with the hem of her skirt. “Well, obviously I hadn’t been able to talk to her over these past weeks, and the last time we did… she… she sounded very upset.”

The silence that followed was kind of chocking, and she was sure that the both of them were feeling it. When Mimi couldn’t stand the silence anymore, and prepared herself to talk, Yamato beat her to it.

“We had a fight before this tour began, and I didn’t get the chance to apologize… The guilt it’s eating me up,” he said. “And she’s probably feeling the same.”

Mimi placed a hand on his shoulder, maybe because she wanted to comfort him somehow or maybe because she just felt the need to be a little closer to him, and her feelings must have shown on her face because the moment their eyes locked, a spark of realization appeared on Yamato’s eyes. He softened his gaze, and didn’t bother to hide the sadness he felt at the time. Mimi was overcome with a sudden urge to breakdown and cry.

“Mimi…”

“Please, don’t… It’s okay, really,” she cut his sentence quickly.

She didn’t need his pity.

Yamato reached for her face, forcing her to look up into his eyes. “I love Sora with every fiber of my being.”

Of course he loved her, you didn’t need to be a genius to realize that, all you needed to do was look at them and you would see the magnificent love they shared. And, sometimes, when all the DD’s met at the Digi-world, she felt like they were in their own personal reality, where no one could disturb them.

“I know…” she whispered, looking down at her lap.

Yes, she knew. And she also knew it was her own fault that nobody found out about her crush, she never said anything. She thought it was a fleeting feeling, something that would pass, but even when she moved to the States, the feeling remained, taunting her, and reminded her from what could have been. And by the time she gathered enough courage to confess to him, he was officially dating Sora.

Before Mimi could react to the sudden movement at her side, she felt a soft pressure on her lips. She barely had time to close her eyes and enjoy the feeling of his lips against hers, and just like that, Yamato pulled away and slid off the bench.

“Yamato…”

“Don’t tell Sora about this, I’ll tell her myself as soon as I get back to Japan,” he said, his eyes sad and serious.

“Okay.”

A moment of silence, and Yamato offered his hand to her. “Come on, let’s get back to the hotel.”

Mimi nodded and took his hand, not letting go even as they exited the park, because this was as close as she was going to get to him now, it was all he could offer. This past week he shared part of his world with her, and the light that shone down on everybody came not from one but two stars. It’s was Yamato and Mimi, together.

And that, somehow, was enough for her.
