Uh... Yeah, another drabble for prompt #58 - glass. The mods haven't closed the challenge yet, so I might just post it right?
Anyway, I plan to work more on this lousy plot-bunny, and develop something more consistent. I kinda got attached to this set of ficlets.

The sound of shattering glass was the last thing they heard from their spouses.
In his case, the sound came from the mirror that hung next to the front-door when his wife knocked it off the wall, as she stormed out of his life for good. That, and the loud crying of their children, was all she left behind.
In hers, it came from the vase her godson used to stop her husband when he tried to attack her, again. Her babies’ frightened faces were reason enough to run away, children in tow, from that life, that man, for good.

The first time they met was on a cloudy afternoon, while they looked for their children among the sea of kids exiting the school. And once they spotted them, the surprise was too much for them.
Carlisle couldn’t understand how his twins -shy, introverted Jasper and bitter, self-centered Rosalie- were laughing so freely with someone other than him; three simple kids.
Esme could only stare as she watched her godson, Emmett, crack joke after joke, earning hearty laughs from Alice and the blonde kids next to him, and a sincere smile from Edward.
Right then, they shared a grateful smile.

The next time, it was during summer vacation.
Carlisle had finally managed to take a few days off work, and he spent those days with his children as much as possible.
It was on the first sunny day that he saw her again. Well, he saw her children first, running straight to the twins to play; she appeared later, a gentle smile on her face as she sat next to him. And, after sharing a nod, they turned to watch the kids play.
They didn’t exchange a word then, only marveled in the hope this town called Forks gave them.

The first time they talked, she was running late to pick her kids up from school.
The worry and guilt disappeared the moment she saw him playing with her children and his owns around the schoolyard. That picture touched something deep within her.
“Thank you so much for looking after them,” she was saying minutes later.
“It’s no problem. They are my kids’ best friends; it’s the least I could do.”
No introductions, no formalities, just those words and that seemed to connect them somehow.
After the kids were done playing, they parted ways with a smile on their faces.

After that day, and after realizing that their kids grew closer and closer with each passing day, they talked more often. Mostly about the children, only going into different topics when they were sure it was a safe one.
And soon, a strong friendship was born between them. The evident attraction, however, went unnoticed by them.
Only when days became weeks, and weeks became months, they acknowledged the mutual attraction they felt. But, for fear of another failed relationship and the possibility of hurting their kids, they ignored it.
So, time passed by, and they could not ignore it anymore.

The first time they kissed was after the twins’ tenth birthday party.
It was so sudden that neither Carlisle, nor Esme stopped to think about the consequences of it. They barely made any contact, the kiss was chaste and timid, but it was perfectly sweet, and it was enough for them to feel they had something special.
A shattering sound broke them apart, and they turned to see their kids standing over a broken vase, looking somewhat guilty.
Suddenly, Emmett grinned at them and said, “Well, about time!” before walking back into the living-room, dragging the others along with him.

It was embarrassing to know that their own children were expecting that to happen, and even more when they found out they wanted it to happen. But it was better that way in the end, because now they knew they had their support.
“Well…”
“We should…”
They turned to look at each other and smiled. “…Wait.”
Yes, waiting was definitely the best choice at the time. The old wounds were still too fresh, and they didn’t want to walk right into another failure. Besides, why rush something that worked so well on its own?
A smile; a kiss.
Wait, indeed.
