Glee 1.2 Showmance

This show is like Gold Diggers (of 1933). It’s my happy place. Pantomime characterisation and paper-thin plots but does anyone watch the Astaire/Rogers or Busby Berkley or Freed unit movies for the bits in between the production numbers? In the non-musical sections of Singin’ in the Rain Lina is an irredeemable monster, Cosmo a funny side kick, Kathy an impossibly bland ingénue and Gene Kelly is Gene Kelly. Singing brings them to life. Singing, Mercedes is co-lead, Artie a sex god, Rachel all heart and Kurt totally pwns Finn nice-but-dim.

I do like the nastiness, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is deliciously evil and knows exactly what she’s doing. Even though so many of them are malevolent, women are the actors in this show, Finn and Will bumble along catching the occasional clue, they talk the talk about dreams but rarely have any idea of their content. Quinn and Terri, by contrast, know what they want far too specifically. Although Quinn can sing, so I smell some form of redemption in her future - in musicals true evil is tone deaf. Which puts the toe tapping Principal Figgins on the side of the angels but Terri, whose hysterical pregnancy shifts her character from domestic Sylvestrian to demented harpy, is probably doomed to be little more than the evidence that Ryan Murphy has wife issues like Joss Whedon has bad Dads.
