Today, I sat in the main corridor of my university's Memorial Union building. I had just bought myself my first coffee-drink in ages and was sipping on it quietly. I took out my textbook for my Music Theory class, which is getting harder and harder by the day, and did my best to study since the test this morning concluded the last chapter and I like to get a head start on the next one. (It seems to take me longer to get it than others some times. I really hate that....) I got about half-way through, having spilt crumbs from the pastry I was eating on it, and looked up at the many flags that line the ceiling.

It really is a beautiful building, I thought, noticing the arches and the little chairs and tables that sat in the little alcoves they formed on the upper balcony. I'd never really taken the time to just appreciate the building, and today, I chose to people-watch instead of study. Shame on me to all intents and purposes. It's my birthday this weekend, so I'm allowed to indulge a little.

Purple coat. Black suede boots. Orange shoes. Red hat. Rain-splattered umbrella with pink polka-dots.

Little things that made me appreciate the world I was living in.

In the display cases next to me and on the other side of the hallway, there were pieces of art displayed. One that caught my interest was of an old bellows-style camera that'd been converted into a rather whimsical clock, complete with dominoes, dice and curly pieces of red metal. On the opposite side, beautiful photos were hung behind the glass. Brilliant colors with their saturation adjusted just so, depicting old streets, buildings, boats in the shipyard. Sometimes it amazes me what we miss by not being able to see the trees through the forest.

Then, just as I thought it couldn't get much more interesting, someone started to play the piano in the main lounge, strong and sure. Being a music major, this made me quite happy. Every Thursday, there's a concert held in that lounge, but being Friday, I hadn't expected it, and so it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

I should've stayed longer, but I finished my coffee and put my book back in my bag. I had left it out on the table as a convenient excuse to remain where I was... I put my rain jacket back on and marched back to my little co-op, the house I live in with sixty-something other women (arhhggg!). The funny thing about this is that I know my German class is at 1:00, but I left the house early to go back into the pouring rain and got there at 12:00. Aren't I just brilliant? So, here I am back at the computer center writing down my little pre-anniversarial peregrinations. I'm just killing an hour down here, but I felt inclined to write about this.

music, color, coffee, people watching
