I should be reading student works for law review, but I needed a short break. Anyway, this private Catholic school in New York is
cancelling the prom in response to the "decadence" that goes into the prom -- kids putting $10,000 down payments on houses in the Hamptons for after-prom parties, parents renting boats for booze cruises, etc. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, prom is supposedly this rite of passage and a big deal in high school (I personally did not have that great a time either year I went to prom, but whatever). And people have a right to spend their money however they want. On the other hand, parents should get a fucking clue. Indulging their kids' every fucking desire is probably not the best parenting method. I've been friends with people whose parents never said "no" to them, and they're pretty insufferable people when they don't get their way. Do we really need to be raising a generation of people like this? I'm thinking no. Anyway, I'm interested in what other people think...
