Forgot to post this link earlier. I'm not sure I agree with this article. At all. But it's interesting. The intern program director sent me the link (no idea why):

You mean that women can do something other than cook and get pregnant? Oh right, right; wash dishes. I always forget one.

Heh.

All jokes aside, I can see some truth in that most of the populations' preconceived notions is that women are less competative than men. Is that actually true? Dunno. Maybe it's a testosterone thing. I highly doubt that it is a sociological thing only because I think about 90% of so-called sociological factors are actually attributable to something more primitive. This is a perfect example. Testosterone actually makes men more assertive and more competitive. This isn't science fiction. This is fact. The more testosterone that an individual produces, the more true this is. Look at the competitive nature of men under ~30 years of age. They are much more aggressive, much more competitive, and much more prone to "lay it all on the line" than men over ~30 years of age. It is true that life experience and wisdom play a roll in this but it is also due to the fact that testosterone production starts heading south in a male in his early to mid 30's.

Oh, and just for food for thought, I read a chart a few years ago that listed men in occupations with the most testosterone production. Out of the top 5 I distinctly remember two: Military fighter pilots and trial lawyers.

yea, i understand the testosterone aspects of the article. but, i think the part of the article that frustrated me the most was the survey that women are satisfied in their lower-paying positions, etc etc. i distrust surveys in general, but i think that the complacency could stem from a feeling of powerlessness. having worked with several female plaintiffs in sex discrimination suits, i get the sense that women are dissatisfied, they just don't feel like they can do anything. granted my experience is limited and anecdotal.

another problem that i have with the idea that women are less competitive is that when women are competitive, they get labeled a "ball buster" or a bitch or something worse. they play the game, and they still can't win. of course, it's not like there aren't double standards for guys too. but that's a whole different discussion.
