Tutorial: the making of 'Something Blue Movie Poster'

Aug 28, 2005 08:52

hey :) it's me and guess what I'm drinking... yeah, someone should hide that stuff from me...
surprisingly the Something Blue Poster won so far. I might be convinced to do another tut if some of the other posters will get more votes than this one...

I started with a new PS document (size: 160x200px, color: #F592C1)

I added a gradient (b/w, radial)

and set it on Soft Light blending mode, 50% opacity

I added another gradient (b/w, linear) and set it on Soft Light, 100% opacity

and another b/w layer on soft Light mode, 100% opacity, but this time it's Filter - Render - Clouds

weee, look another Soft Light layer, 80% opacity, but this time it's only a color layer #FCE2BD

time to add the cap, I used Auto-Contrasts (crl+alt+shit+L) on the cap and resized it to about 30%, I also used the Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen.
the blending mode is (surprise!) Soft Light, 100% opacity

I duplicated this layer twice, set the first copy on Soft Light and the second copy on Screen mode

I added the next cap, made a layer mask and erased the background. (usually I make a rough selection with the magnetic lasso tool and then I paint by hand the details)

I loaded the selection by ctrl-clicking on the layer mask in the layer palette and filled the selection with black on a new layer. I hid the original, resized the black silhouettes and found a nice place for our happy couple...

on the next layer I just made a rectangled selection and filled it with black

adding text: Bookman Old Style, 14 pt, Small Caps, white, centered

adding text: Bookman Old Style, 2 pt, Small Caps, white, centered

adding text: Bookman Old Style, 5 pt, All Caps, black, centered

final touches:
on a new layer merge-copy+paste the whole pic (or just stamp visible with ctrl+alt+shift+E)
use Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen and fade it to 20% with Blending Mode Multiply
use Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen and fade it to 50% with Blending Mode Screen
use Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen and fade it to 20% with Blending Mode Soft Light
use Filter - Sharpen - Sharpen

resize it and save it for the web

feedback is welcome, you know writing tuts is a time consuming process, so it's nice to know that it's at least appreciated :)
if there are any questions feel free to ask.
I'm going to do some work out now. *g*
