Who: Mike and Tina
When: Monday October 3, 2011
Where: Student Activities Center
What: Ice cream and surprises

Tina sat at one of the tables in the Student Activities Center waiting for Mike to arrive. It was Monday and Monday was their day, that thought brought a smile to her face. She glanced down at the chair next to here where she’d set the surprise she’d made Mike so that he wouldn’t see it right away. When she’d been making it she was really excited about it but now she was kind of nervous. What if he thought it was silly or what if he didn’t like it at all.

Mike made sure to keep a hand in his jacket pocket as he walked. He knew there was little chance of his...surprise for Tina flying out but it was better to be safe than sorry. For good measure, he patted the folded piece of paper. It was there, slightly crumpled yes, but it was there.

He pushed the door open and stepped inside. He spotted Tina immediately and bounded over to her. “Hey, Chiki!”

Tina grinned immediately, looking up when Mike approached. “Hi Rink! Did you have a good Monday?”

“Yep,” Mike nodded as he took the seat across from her. “It was one of the better Mondays I’ve had. Dance Team was awesome!” They started a new routine and Mike was pleased with their progress. His mood at the moment was the combination of lingering performance high and the happiness he felt when he was with Tina.

Tina grinned again. She was finding more and more that she couldn’t not be happy when she was with Mike, he was the bright side to everything. Not that she’d been having a bad day, she’d actually been having a good day, but she was just happier now. “That sounds so cool. Do you guys have like performances and stuff?” She’d really like to see him dance again.

“I think?” Mike wasn’t sure. He was definitely not paying attention if they mentioned it earlier. He was too busy goofing around, dancing with a mop. He even named it. Moplissa. She was a cool partner, if not very responsive. “I’ll ask next time.”

“Awesome. Well if you do, I’m going to be there, front row,” she tucked her hair behind her ear and grinned at him.

“Cool. I’ll make sure to dance extra good for you,” Mike replied with a grin.

“Okay,” Tina answered. She really, really, hoped that she’d get to see him perform. She ducked her head, sneaking a glance at her surprise before looking back at him, “so...do you want your surprise now or later?”

Mike fidgeted in his seat. That was a hard question. It wasn’t fair of Tina to just spring it on him. Ice cream first or his surprise? Surprise or ice cream? Maybe he should surprise her and give her surprise? “Well...” He started, drawing the syllable out. “I got something for you too.”

“You do?” Tina asked, tilting her head to look at him.

“Yep, sure do. Got it right here.” Mike patted his jacket and smiled.

“Hmm...” Tina smiled back. “Well then that changes everything,” she teased.

“Really? It does? How?”

“Okay. Probably not everything,” Tina shrugged, “there’s just too many combinations of things we could do now. Before there were two options, now there’s tons.”

“Well, not tons. But there are a few combinations.” Mike had listed them all down in his head. They could exchange gifts first and then go for ice cream. Or they could do it the other way around. And then there were the scenarios where they took a break from the gift giving and ate ice cream. He didn’t want Tina to hear all that though.

Tina laughed, holding up her hands in defense. “Okay, so it doesn’t change everything and there aren’t tons of options. I sometimes like to exaggerate,” she stuck her tongue out at him playfully.

Mike just stuck his tongue out in reply.

Tina laughed again. “So it’s going to be like that, huh?”

“S’gonna be like what?”

“No,” Tina shook her head, sighing dramatically for effect. “Not like what. It’s going to be like that”

He can play this game. And he wasn’t about to lose. Mike crossed his arms and gave her his best puppy dog face.

“Now that’s not fair,” Tina told him, she really wanted to win and she wasn’t going to with him giving her those eyes. She tried to look away from him but she couldn’t manage. “Quit looking at me like that.”

“Like what?” He asked, leaning forward. He was sure, with a bit of effort, he could make his eyes water.

Tina groaned, shaking her head. “You are so...” cute her mind supplied but she shook her head again and substituted with, “difficult.”

“Am not!” Mike pulled back, a smug expression firmly planted on his face. “You just can’t handle it.”

“No, no I can’t,” Tina agreed laughing. “I think you win, whatever that just was.”

“Does that mean I get my surprise first? You did just say I won,” he asked.

Tina shrugged, smiling, “I guess, that’s what it means.” She reached down and grabbed the comic she’d drawn him. Setting it on the table so that it was face up and sliding it towards him. “It’s, uhh, I drew it for you. It’s...it’s kind of silly,” she blushed and looked away.

Mike reached out and touched the cover. “Oh. Wow. That’s...wow. Did I say wow? Because it’s...awesome. Super duper awesome, Chiki! That’s you and me, right? I’m the one with the red headband right? Cuz, red...I like red. And...did I say how awesome this is?” He smiled brightly at her. This was the best surprise ever. His own surprise couldn’t compare to this. He was actually having second thoughts about giving it to Tina. He really should’ve polished his song instead.

“You really like it?” Tina looked up at him and grinned. It didn’t seem like he was just saying that. “Ya, that’s you in red and me in yellow. I figured I should be in yellow because...well, yellow Rose and all...and you get to be the jumping ninja getting all ready to do some secret ninja move because you’re the experienced one.” She smiled at him again.

“I don’t like it. I love it!” Mike exclaimed. He flipped through the pages and stared at Tina’s drawings. His mind reeled as he thought of how to postpone his own gift-giving.

“Good. I’m glad. Really happy...” she trailed off. She was getting better at stopping the rambling before it got out of hand. She drummed her fingers against the table top lightly. “So...do I get my surprise now or what?” She wasn’t usually one for surprises but she was actually really curious to see what Mike’s surprise was going to be.

“I am too. Happy, I mean.” Mike replied. He shoved his hand into his pocket and fingered the folded piece of paper. It was nothing compared to the comic she’d given him. “Um...about that...I think we’ve both had enough surprise in one night?”

“What?” Tina was confused, why would Mike have said he had a surprise if he didn’t? Unless he didn’t like his surprise very much and he was just pretending and now he didn’t want to give her whatever he had for her. She frowned, “Umm...okay?”

“It’s just...my surprise is not as awesome as your surprise and I want to give you something equally epic,” Mike rushed to explain. He didn’t want to make Tina think he was going back on his word, or worse, lying.

“Oh,” Tina answered, surprised by his response. “But how do you know it’s not as awesome? Don’t I get to be the judge of that? I bet it’s really awesome actually,” she smiled softly at him. “Rink, you’re the most awesome person I know. Whatever your surprise is it couldn’t possibly not be awesome. It’s from you, so I know I’m going to love it. I promise.” She smiled at him again, hoping to reassure him. She truly meant it. He could give her anything and she just knew she’d love it.

“I know it’s not awesome because, hello, I made it.” What he had was far from awesome. It was embarrassing.

“Stop that right now, Rink,” Tina said reaching over and putting her hand on top of his. “You’re not allowed to say anything that implies you’re anything less than awesome. That’s the rules. Got it?” She tapped his hand once before she pulled back.

“Oh, so you’re changing the rules now? You gotta warn a guy about things like this, Chiki,” Mike replied. His eyes were drawn to her hand on top of his. He linked their fingers together and stuck his free hand in his jacket pocket. “Just...be nice, okay? This is my first.” He pulled out the piece of paper and smoothed it out in front of her. “So...you said you wanted a Mike Chang original...”

Tina smiled immediately as she looked at the picture. She couldn’t look away from it. She traced her fingers over the ‘M’ and then over the ‘T’ in the stick figure forms. “It’s perfect Rink,” she said softly, “so perfect.” She eventually tore her eyes away from the picture and looked up at him. “You should trust me more. I was so right. It’s awesome. It’s more than awesome.”

Mike shook his head. “Nah, yours is definitely better than mine. Mine is just...a mess.”

Tina shook her head back at him. She couldn’t believe that he’d actually drawn her something, it made her feel special. It was so nice of him and the picture really was perfect. “I love it, Rink. Really, I do. I can’t believe you actually drew this for me.”

“Well...you said you wanted one...so...I made one for you,” Mike mumbled, ducking his head. He could feel his cheeks heat up. “S’not that big of a deal.” Except, it was. Because Mike never showed his doodles to anyone ever.

“Well, thank you,” Tina told him. “This is the best surprise ever possibly.”

“I’m glad you like it.” When he felt the heat subside, he looked up at her, smiling. “Now that we got that over with. Ice cream time now?”

Tina grinned. “Definitely ice cream time.”
