You've got a boat load of nerve

To walk away from Gainesville after getting educated here and then slandering it and the people who have stayed here after getting a degree...for whatever reason. In my instance it's because I just so happened to find work in my field which offers me benefits and paid vacation. I found it comforting to stay here instead of going somewhere completely unfamiliar as a recently anointed motherless child.

Gainesville has been good to me, and by that I mostly mean the university of florida which my company is closely associated with. I have met, and am working with some of the most well-versed and level-headed scientists i've ever been around. No, I don't get paid a huge salary and I'm not becoming a townie...but I feel good about being here right now. I'm not less of a person because I stayed in this little "redneck college town" or because I didn't march off to some big city and while I haven't been directly knocked for staying here, I know too many people who look at Gainesville as somewhere that you stay if you aren't going very far, or somewhere to be ashamed of taking residence in.

I find that Gainesville has provided me with a much needed familiarity in the past couple of years and that my job here is giving me exposure to people and science that I value greatly. Nevermind that Gainesville is economically friendly. The university of florida has some great science going on right now and anyone who thinks less of us who have stayed and gotten involved can kiss my snow white canadian ass.
