We were flying out early in the morning, so we came down to Buffalo on Thursday evening. I was in a mood for beef on weck; the most convenient place to get one after 10 PM that was near our route was the Buffalo Brewpub at Main and Transit in East Amherst. The weather was typical for Buffalo in February, which is to say horrible, limited visibility and wet snowflakes turning into slush before they hit the ground, but not so bad that Buffalo drivers couldn't cope with it. While we were there, Continental flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center, about four and a half miles northwest of us. We didn't know about the crash at the time, though we did see a bunch of fire trucks go by. By the time we got to the Red Roof Inn near the airport, the news about the crash was on the television in the hotel lobby. While I was getting up this morning, I turned on the news. This was the only story on all the local channels of course. I switched to CNN, and it was the lead story there too. President Obama had sent condolences to the family and friends of the crash victims. While we were in the hotel lobby waiting for the taxi to take us to the airport, the American Red Cross called in and booked ten rooms at the hotel we were checking out of.
Our flight out this morning was overbooked and they asked for volunteers to be bumped. Since our plans in Boston are essentially canceled anyway,
marahsk arranged for us to go on the next direct flight, leaving at 2:30 this afternoon. We're flying on US Airways on a Bombardier CRJ. So now we're sitting at the pub next to Gate 4. And we have vouchers so that we can get to Norwescon.
