You know, I am a mom, I am a wife, I live in a house that I've lived in for many years, but still, being with my parents is still "going home." I never lived in their current house with them: they moved into this place maybe 15 years ago. Doesn't matter.
My parents bought the tickets for me and Benito. I would simply not have been able to go alone, and I couldn't afford to buy one ticket let alone two. I cannot thank them enough for this trip.
We flew out on Wednesday, April 17th: YVR -> ORD -> JAX. It's really easy to travel with Benito; he doesn't run amok in the airport, he doesn't freak out for any part of the flight, he even likes being in charge of his own rolling bag. YVR to ORD was fine, and we had the easiest Chicago experience EVER! Instead of being in a different terminal with 15 minutes to boarding flight #2, we got in at gate H5, and our next flight boarded 30 minutes later at gate H6. We stepped into the terminal, took about 15 steps to the side, and then had time to do some running and giggling and getting some energy out before sitting a lot again. On the second flight, we got to watch Tangled, all but the last 25 minutes. We got into JAX around 11:30 PM, which was of course only 8:30 PM for Benito's body clock. We were picked up by Gadi and Ilan, and Gadi mentioned wanting pie, so of course we went to Denny's before heading home and had chocolate lava cake and apple cobbler a la mode. (Only diners serve pie all the time, we guess.)
Thursday we got to greet Abbaba, Ammama, and my nephew/Benito's cousin Zohar once we all awoke. Zohar is my oldest brother's middle child - 32, I think. He met Benito previously in September, and he's only met me once before that as well. It was really good to see him, though he's admittedly an intense dude. Tahl arrived mid-day with her two dogs, Lucy and Walter. Benito was in heaven: aunt, uncles, "new" cousin, AND two dogs?!?
I am behind on travelogue, and will continue to be. I'm just tired, not good focus. Summary notes: the seders would've been better if there were a few more people, and second seder was mostly Hebrew, which was challenging. Gadi has to leave after first seder; Ilan and I actually drove him to the airport at 2 AM so he could sleep there and not have to get *up* with Ilan at 4 AM for his 6 AM flight. Benito and I got to the beach a bunch of times. There was a lot of good food, and some new food options this year: almond butter and pecan butter, both yummy in diferent ways (and amounts). I have the recipe for Chicken Mandalay; I might even make it... sometime... in the near future? Benito loved it, which is why it's worth doing for me.
I watched Book Club with my parents, and they loved it as much as I thought they would. It's quite a hilarious film; you can call it "chick flick" if you want but I'll scold you for it. *grin* It's not exactly formulaic romance novel, but pretty darn close to it, I'd say. My parents are both using tablets for e-reading, and they share a digital library, with LOTS of romance novels! They're just adorable together.
I hope I get back there before Benito's bar mitzvah, that that's the kind of range I'm thinking. Next year we have Gadi's eldest's bat mitzvah in Chevy Chase, and ... well, I don't know after that. We haven't taken a family vacation NOT to see other family, and I don't know when we will, or what it would be. I know Rick has ideas, but I am going to freak out about budgeting, so that's not something I'm looking forward to.
More eventually.
