Not Quite Super Enough
Doojoon realizes quickly -- at age eight, to be exact -- how helpful his gift could be. He could find the missing, reunite families, bring happiness to complete strangers and know he did something good that day.
Unfortunately, today seems like it's not going to be one of those days.
"I lost my neighbor," the boy sitting next to him cries softly. He's eleven, the same age as Doojoon, but looks so much younger with his tiny face and huge eyes. "We were running away to the park, but then I lost him."
They're sitting on a bench in said park, licking ice cream cones Doojoon bought using money from his last job and he wonders how far this Yoseob's friend is. Hopefully not too far, and not in a completely different side of town, because Doojoon could only remember so much of the city's layout.
"Well," Doojoon starts, "if you could give me a picture with both of his eyes visible, I can try to locate him for you."
Just a look into a pair of eyes, frozen in time would suffice. Eyes were the windows to the soul after all, how Doojoon found all of his marks. Just a single look and he could see through their eyes, see what they could see and then they would be found and everyone would be happy.
He doesn't let on about his power though, not quite yet. He doesn't know how many times he's offered his help, only to have crazy old religious folks chasing after him with a cane for suggesting such blasphemies. Yoseob doesn't seem like the type to do that, but neither did that kind-looking old granny from two weeks ago.
Yoseob hesitates, but pulls out a worn photo from the pocket of his jeans of him and another boy -- Kikwang -- smiling brightly at the camera. They both look a year or two younger, but Yoseob is immediately recognizable and it's obvious how close the two in the photo are if Doojoon looks closely enough.
But Doojoon's heart immediately sinks. He realizes that one of Kikwang's eyes are completely covered by messy long hair, and he wishes he could control time so he could take back his words.
As happy as his power has made him and others, it's times like this -- when a client is looking at him with eyes full of hope he gave them that will only be squashed in the end -- that Doojoon feels like it's not a gift after all.
He wants to cry. Not just for Kikwang who he won't find, not just for Yoseob who he can't help, but for himself who will have to endure this probably a million times and more.
Second in a set of three superpower!Beast drabbles. The theme for this 15 minute challenge was "disability" which Doojoon sees his... idek what to call it, lol. Ability to see through others' eyes? Yeah, he sees it as too limited.
