Boxing in Carlton (1920s)
Carlton Cafe moved to a new, larger building on Bubbling Well Road, at the edge of the Racecourse, in 1923. One of the regular events that entertained the public were the boxing matches. After a discussion here I found this cute photo in my stashes:

Local Nazis had a swimming party... (1932)
The China Press, August 1932:
"Local Nazis had a swimming party in the Embankment swimming pool on Thursday night. Guests were a trifle perturbed because the pool tiling is not swastika paneled."
This newspaper frequently snuck in ironic commentary into its brief news section.

The most exclusive club in Shanghai...
... was the little Bowling Club on Nanking Road, at No. 49, close to the corner of Honan Road. It was established in 1857 at what was then the outskirts of the city. The club maintained its exclusivity by keeping the membership numbers low; in the 1920s the club still only had 24 members.
