One of the most informative and entertaining accounts of Shanghai in the 1940s was written by Victor Smolnikoff. "Pidgin Inglis Tails and Others" (1906) by Frederick Wilkin Iago Aires is, no doubt, quite racist, but the Victorian-style illustrations he drew throughout the book are delightful and remind of Edward Gorey.
