It is painfully hard to reduce the fantastically rich photo documentation that emerges from
our friends’ urban explorations, which help record and illustrate the vanishing landscape of
Shanghai’s Old Town. Today’s featured architecture is the two mansions of the Suzhou merchant Yang Shousheng 杨寿生 in the old town’s northeast quarter. One building is a
sprawling shikumen courtyard, the other an
eclectic villa, very close to each other; neither appears to be intended for the heritage preservation.
