Listening to Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri, and god, all I can think of is
Erik comes back to the mansion years later, and begs Charles to forgive him and take him back.
Charles refuses, says Erik has made too big of a name for himself, that him being in the mansion will put his students in danger. And Charles can't risk loving him anymore,

The government would keep the trial very hush hush and would carry out the execution just as quietly. Once they've confirmed Erik's death, they'd announce "Magneto is Dead" and humans would rejoice. News broadcasts would be as extensive as when Osama was killed. There would be arguments over the human/mutant alliance, etc. No human stops to think twice about Erik, about Magneto.
But Charles? Charles would pause in front of the television. He wouldn't quite understand and he'd be watching it over and over and trying to think--what? when did this happen? Something like guilt, or agony, or perhaps even fear would trickle into his heart. He will not accept it. Everyone in the school flinches when he sends out this huge pulse of sudden, hot, burning anger.
(How dare Erik do this? To pretend to be dead, play at his sympathies, his empathy and emotions. Because of course this has to be a lie; Erik, the only equal he's found, can't be dead, he's still out there.)
No one's ever seen Charles on a rampage. He would use Cerebro with such intensity people collapse, he would dig into the right minds and pull this information out and realise--yes, it's true. He would find the body and see how nakedly HUMAN it suddenly looks, how vulnerable his old friend is. (Despite everything, a part of him still loved the man, more than he had loved anyone else and it fucking hurts, pain coursing through his body like sour acid.)
That's when the projections start. Charles would be overridden with guilt because--Erik asked for forgiveness, asked for help and hope and repentance and in a moment of weakness you turned him away. So Charles makes a projection of Erik and speaks to him constantly, asking for his own forgiveness.
Erik, the fake Erik, would never give him that. And just maybe, if this was a dark!AU, Charles would grow increasingly mad, begging to do anything to get Erik back. To make Erik "happy". And Cerebro is right there. Charles could control everyone so that they never questioned Erik's methods. That they all thought Erik was amazing and that he was still alive. So Charles would pretend and eventually convince himself that he was by Erik's side, that they were controlling the world together and everything was beautiful.
It was the utopia they had both wanted. It was good and there was peace.
(You know why? The winners decide what's right and wrong and Charles is tired of choosing. His peace is hardly a peace at all and more like a dictatorship, but he doesn't care anymore.)
...
Well, that's how I could see Charles reacting. ;)

This is exactly how Charles would react and it would all be TOO LATE, and fuck.

But I feel like the only thing keeping Charles from taking over the world is his morals and sanity. And if either of them were taken away... hey presto, dark!Charles! :D

And fuck, this is so plausible, because he loved Erik and Erik killed Shaw when Charles was in his head, and he took Charles' legs, and when Charles was rightfully angry and taking a stand for himself Erik gave up and made everything worse while trying to make it better, because just because they're mutants doesn't mean they're not human.
God, if either of them had just listened, really listened to the others pov NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

Everyone overlooks him because he's in a wheelchair, which is stupid. Being in a wheelchair makes him no less of a BAMF.
Also, they needed their MANLY MAN TEARS OF ANGST. They couldn't listen! XD Honestly, both of them need a good slap to the face and then go off to screw each other's brains out. (This would = world peace.)

And just. Ugh, why can't they stop being idiots. Charles, get a clue, humans kill what they fear, JOIN ERIK, IT IS FOR THE BEST. IF YOU RULE THE WORLD YOU CAN PROTECT HUMANS BETTER. DUMBASS.

Erik has never been the ideal poster child for logic though. He just HAD to fling the bullets away dramatically, instead of, you know, pausing them like he did in the X1 movie. Christ.
Sorry for making you cry though. :/
